Free Music Notes for The Trumpet Child

Free Music Review: A Nice Addition to the OTR Catalogue
Hit: 5 Stars

Over the Rhine is a band I've been listening to since the early nineties. OTR has the imaginative ability to reach new heights using any style they choose. Trumpet Child is no exception. Pushing away from the gospelesque swoons of Ohio and Drunkard's Prayer, their latest release is a collection of jazzy/swing sounds with some big band licks thrown in for good measure. And for those who still long for the gospel sounds of their previous two releases, the album tracks are essentially bookended with two tunes that won't disappoint. Loved this album.

Free Music Review: Great Band, Great Album
Hit: 5 Stars

Recently went to see Over the Rhine in Stuart, FL and, not being familiar with their work, bought several of their early albums in advance of the concert to get in the groove. All I can say is that Over the Rhine has come a long way in the last twenty years or so. While the early albums reflected the times when they were released, The Trumpet Child seamlessly melds country, folk, blues, gospel, adult comtemporary and, perhaps, even a little bit of klezmer, for good measure.

This album makes for great listening from beginning to end.

Free Music Review: Brilliant
Hit: 5 Stars

The more I listen to it, the more impressed I become. Karin and Linford are at the top of their game. This one is more playful and less "dark" (with "Nothing Is Innocent" as a notable exception) than previous releases, but they deserve to revel in the good a little on the heels of the struggles that produced Drunkard's Prayer.

Sit down with a good set of headphones and a glass of wine and listen deep to the space and texture of this well-crafted album. Too good to pass up.

Free Music Review: BERGQUIST/DETTWEILER KEEP 'EM COMING
Hit: 5 Stars

The combo of Linford Dettweiler and the marvelous voice of Karen Bergquist rocks. If you aren't familiar with this Cincinnati group, find a venue and go see them. They travel a lot, even to my home, Florida. Wonderful music here. This CD is very good, more jazzy than normal but still a great CD. This group need to break out into the top singer/songwriter groups around, commercially that is, because they are already in with the best talent. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Free Music Review: Over The Rhine - An Aural Gift for All
Hit: 5 Stars

I first read about "Over The Rhine" in Paste Magazine. I heard the cut "Trouble" on one of their sample disks and I was hooked. Fun, jazzy arrangements with the sultry vocals of Karin Bergquist, who sounds like she enjoys vamping it up and wants to get into trouble! Not really a bad cut on this recording. Good arrangements and fine vocals. Everytime I play this recording for dinner guests they have run out and bought a copy.
