Free Music Notes for The Trumpet Child

Free Music Review: An interesting departure.
Hit: 4 Stars

I wasn't prepared for the soulful, jazz and blues-laced vocals on this album. After several listenings, though, I am enjoying the piano dominated sessions. After years of quiet, thoughtful folk, this lively departure seems forced at times. I am eager to see them on tour, and wonder what flavor will dominate.

A great band a good album. Not my favorite from this group, Drunkards prayer, Good Dog Bad Dog are to name a couple, but it is still spending a lot time on our stereo.

Free Music Review: What a difficult album to review
Hit: 3 Stars

An odd personal coincidence regarding the release of this album is that it comes at a time when I'm really getting back into the Smashing Pumpkins; personally, I'm a bigger fan of their later work, Adore being my favorite of their albums. What's curious is that Adore was such a departure for the Pumpkins that many of their new fans who had been so turned on by Mellon Collie were equally turned off by Adore. Bands very often take a creative turn that many fans are unwilling to take with them. Unlike the Pumpkins, however, I'm not as enthused with OtR's latest offering. Most of OtR's albums have at least one track that's something of a clue as to the direction they'll be headed next time around, and I'd say Stella's Tarantella, that jazzy little track on Drunkard's Prayer about which I am least enthusiastic, fits this description. (They've also been doing quite a few jazzy numbers in their live shows, as evidenced in Live from Nowhere volumes 1 and 2)The great majority of this album is very much in this same style: jazzy, with a little flair of cabaret thrown in for good measure. I'm certainly a jazz fan, and Karin's vocals are well suited to this musical genre, and Linford's piano work is outstanding, of course. But it's not what I've come to expect, and love, about this duo. Good Dog/Bad Dog, Ohio, and Drunkard's Prayer are absolute gems of the folk-rock genre. I fell in love with each of them from the very first listen. Like Stella's Tarantella, I simply didn't fall in love with this album at first listen. I have grown to appreciate S's T, and I'm sure I'll do the same with Trumpet Child, but I'm already looking forward to OtR's next album and hoping it will be a departure from this, well, departure.

Free Music Review: Who is this for?
Hit: 2 Stars

I like The Trumpet Child only 1 Stars worth, but I give it an extra star for the courage it took to release something so completely different. I admire Linford and Karin creating something basically for themselves and not necessarily for their fan base. All artists should be this true to themselves. Yes, they hope that we will all go along for the ride. Unfortunately I don't see that happening. If you look at OTR's most recent releases there are glimmers of the Jazzy, Loungy style that makes up all of Trumpet Child, but nothing that prepared us for this. I don't think the average Over The Rhine fan will like this. Not at all. Yes, there are the super fans who are attached to the band who are incapable of criticizing anything. And there are the fans who happen to like this style of music (I wish I was one of them because Karin's voice is still so beautiful). But for most of us who love Good Dog Bad Dog, Films For Radio and Ohio this is another planet. Out of the many hundreds of cd's lying all over my house I don't have another that sounds like this (except for unfortunately OTR's recent Christmas album). You can criticize me for being narrow minded in my musical taste, but I just don't like this. I want to, but can't.

Free Music Review: Distressing!
Hit: 2 Stars

I never suspected this band, whom I admired, would take such a turn both musically and lyrically, but it has happened. The jazzy, cabaret feel to the album does not appeal. And, most distressing, the childish longings of the Bush-bashing final track just make these folks sound foolish. Sad, sad day!
