Free Music Review: SHEER DISAPPOINTMENT
Hit: 2 Stars

WHAT HAVE THEY DONE. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE ALL THEIR OTHER CD'S. NOT SURE WHAT HAPPENED HERE.I CAN ONLY HOPE THEY GO BACK TO WHERE THEY WERE. THIS IS NOT A CD I WILL LISTEN TO MUCH. WHAT A BUMMER.

Free Music Review: Terribly disappointed
Hit: 1 Stars

This is a band that has such incredibly fabulous potential, but we obviously disagree strongly on what direction they should take. Over the Rhine has cut wonderful records like "Ohio", "Drunkard's Prayer", Amateur Shortwave Radio", "Films for Radio", and "Good Bad, Bad Dog", featuring fantastic, progressive songs like "Hometown Boy", "The World Can Wait", "She", "Born", and "How Long Have You been Stoned".
So with this new album, I honestly have no idea what the heck they are thinking. This album almost goes way back to a vaudeville sound and as another reviewer said, takes on a more jazzy direction. I am very sorry the band seems to be choosing this direction because they have such incredible potential as a modern, alternative band with unsurpassed class and authenticity.
I would like to go through the playlist and tell you that this song does this well, and that one is fantastic. But I cannot. To be honest, I can't say that a single cut on this album is anything unique and new. There is nothing here that has not been done by other bands in the past. Absolutely nothing stands out as even average. It is actually quite poor.
We have tickets to se OTR in Columbus in a few weeks, and had I had this album before I bought them, and had I known that this is what they will likely showcase at this concert, I would have never bought tickets. I just hope and pray that they play songs from the above albums as well so the drive from Cleveland is not an entire waste.
OTR, please focus on continuing on the journey you started on the albums and songs above, and please leave the jazz bar sound to less talented wannabes.
And if you are considering buying this album, forget it and buy one of the ones I mentioned above.

Free Music Review: I'm not on board for this one.
Hit: 1 Stars

I love Over The Rhine. Since I first came upon their music soon after Films For Radio was released I have been very impressed with all their new releases (including 3 live albums, rarities collection, everything). Ohio and Drunkard's Prayer are amazing. I wouldn't have imagined giving an OTR release 3 stars, let alone 1 star but simply put this music style does not appeal to me. I don't know how to describe it - torch songs, cabaret, jazz? Obviously OTR is never easily pigeonholed and, up to now, I have always been on board with anything they want to do. This has no relation to the kind of music I am interested in. It sounds like something that was recorded in the 40's. The only song that works for me is Linford's Tom Waits tribute. The last track sounds great but is marred by too precious lyrics and the fact that it is just another you-know-who bashing. I know that many OTR fans will appreciate everything they do and be annoyed by this review, but my advice to anyone on the fence about buying this is to listen to portions of these songs online before you buy. I'll be looking forward to the next one.
