This is Kiwi rocker Dave Dobbyn's 'Greatest Hits' album you could say.
It covers his songs over a period of 20 years going back to "Be mine Tonight ", a 1979 hit
for Auckland rock band Th'Dudes. It has been re-recorded here and rocked up a bit and is quite different
to Th'Dudes version.
"Devil you know" and "Outlook for Thursday" are singles from his next band "DD Smash".
"Magic", "Whaling", and "Guilty" are from his 1984 album the "Optimist", on which he started to hone his songwriting skills.
"Guitly" is his slow torch song where he shows off his versatile voice- nice.
." Whaling" has a great guitar hook from Dobbyn -underrated player IMO.
"Loyal" [1988] - Probably his best song and a very popular hit on radio in New Zealand.
"Slice of Heaven" - Another big hit downunder from the "Loyal" album for Dobbyn. Auckland pacific-reggae band Herbs help out on backing vocals. It has a great hook line and a memorable chorus.
"Naked Flame"(1994) from "Twist" album is another standout for me and I never seem to tire from it.
On "Belle of the Ball" from the "Lament for the Numb" album Pete and Bruce Thomas [part of Elvis C's Attractions] help out on rhythm
section to good effect. Mitchell Froom also plays keyboards on the album. An interesting song with a chorus that grows on you
The others are all memorable and of a high standard, mostly written from a personal introspective point of view.
"Madelaine Avenue" is a new song not released anywhere else about a so called "street of shame" near to where Dobbyn grew up in Glenn Innes, Auckland. To my ears this is an excellent song.
As an introduction to Dave this is nigh on perfect -You can't go wrong.
