Free Music Review: More like 4 1/2 stars: Very different but still original

Don't Mess with the Dragon, Ozomatli's fourth studio album, ranks as one of their best. While their self titled album and Street Signs are nearly perfect albums, this release does have a few minor flaws. The first being the track "Here We Go". This track is undoubtedly the most annoying song I have ever heard ozo do. The second being that some songs do seem a little repetetive, meaning that the chorus takes up the majority of the song. This is most noticeable on the title track.
Other than these set backs, the CD is amazing. "Violeta" has quickly become my favorite Ozo song. It is a beautiful, emotional, laid back song that kinda has the same feel that "cuando canto" did on Street Signs. Some may say that Ozomatli is trying to appeal to a larger audience by making more mainstream songs, but I do not think this is the case. Many songs are very different to anything they have ever done (like the ska/punk sounding "When I Close My Eyes"), but this is not them trying to enter the MTV scene, this is merely Ozomatli exploring their creativity and branching out into new genres of music that they can put their skill into. But do not fret, there are still some great latin beats like in "La Gallina".
Basically they stepped outside their boundaries to make a record that is totally original and is purely Ozomatli. This is definitely worth the money if you like ozomatli even just a little.
