Ozzy Osbourne entered his second decade as a solo artist and third overall with an undisputed triumph and the multi-platinum selling `No More Tears'. I don't think he's made a better record after the two Randy Rhoads classics than this absolute barnstormed that proved at least temporarily that there was still a market for traditional heavy metal during the grunge era. Without the ridiculously heavy guitar riffing courtesy of Zakk Wylde the record might have been seen as just another hair metal record by an aging artist but Wylde puts those thoughts to shame here. Not that there aren't melodic tunes of the power ballad variety here and they are some of the best that the genre has to offer - "Mama", "Road to Nowhere" and "Time After Time" - all featuring autobiographic lyrics with melancholy and a certain road weariness that suits Ozzy perfectly. The title track is a behemoth, a true epic not seen since the days of `Diary of a Madman'. It's a track that builds and climaxes and then builds again and it could easily be one of the greatest songs from this era. "I Don't Wanna Change the World" and "Mr. Tinkertrain" are classic metal stompers and righteously kick the album off in a flurry of metal insanity. There are as many moods here as songs and `No More Tears' could also be the Oz's most diverse album as well. Whether or not his work over the last twenty years or so has been consistent or overshadowed by the TV show or Sharon's celebrity there is no denying that with the proper cohorts (including Lemmy and future Alice In Chains bassist Mike Inez) Ozzy can make heavy metal of the highest caliber..
