Free Music Review: 21st century Ozzy still going very strong...
Hit: 5 Stars

Ozzy, much like his tenured contemporaries, seems to get pigeon holed and put into a very difficult spot with each release. They've got two options: Go into the studio and do the best they can for the love of the music OR kill themselves trying to live up to standards they set so many decades ago to appease the select few who cling to the past like flies on horse droppings. Personally, I prefer option 1 and because of that, I tend to really enjoy each new album. I've always expected and welcomed change with open arms every time Ozzy enters the studio. I'll get this out of the way early and say that this isn't Blizzard of Ozz Jr. or Diary of a Madman Pt. II and there isn't a single Mr. Crowley, Over the Mountain or You Can't Kill Rock n Roll reprise. If for some ungodly reason you're still expecting that 30 years later, don't even bother. This is 21st Century Ozzy. It's fresh, new, heavy and incorporates many modern elements. It's 2010, join us if you will.

On a sonic level, Scream is an absolute monster. It'll shatter glass with any halfway decent sound system. I've read some harsh words about Kevin Churko's sound. I don't quite get why exactly. He finds a way to bring every instrument front and center to kick your head in. Blasko (bass) and Tommy (drums) are loud and fierce as a rhythm section, particularly throughout 'Let It Die' and 'Diggin' Me Down.' I imagine it helps that they've worked together before but whatever the reason, they sound great together. Their fills and timing pulsate throughout the entire album. Additionally, it's nice to hear keyboards sprinkled throughout an Ozzy release again. They haven't been used this heavily in quite some time. Wakeman has a few really nice instrumental pieces and sets a mood in the background beautifully. Check out 'Crucify' and 'I Want It More' as great examples for that eerie vibe.

Gus G, although having no writing credits, completes the riff and solo department quite exceptionally. He has a more classical sound to his approach that creates a much more energetic, fast paced sound that had been missing from more recent Ozzy releases. 'I Want It More' 'Fearless' and 'Diggin Me Down' are fantastic examples. I think he fits well with Ozzy. He has moments that remind me of a few other Ozzy guitarists but still remains his own. It'll be interesting to see how they work together in the future. I'm very much looking forward to that.

Ozzy brings exactly what I expected. The vocals are heavily processed at times but they always have been for the most part and to be honest, it doesn't bother me a single bit. He has a knack for vocal melodies unlike anyone else. Some songs just click instantly and there were a few here I found stuck in my head after just one listen. He has an amazing ear for catchy, addictive vocal lines that weave in and out while remaining decidedly haunting and powerful. It's certainly no different here. His Beatles influences bleed through heavily on 'Life Wont Wait' and 'Time'

Let It Die: 12/10
Let Me Hear You Scream: 8/10
Soul Sucker: 8/10
Life Won't Wait: 10/10
Diggin' Me Down: 15/10
Crucify: 10/10
Fearless: 9/10
Time: 10/10
I Want It More: 9/10
Latimer's Mercy: 7/10
I Love You All: 8/10

I very highly recommend this to those willing to remain open minded about an Ozzy album that stands considerably well on its own after 40 years of recording. It is its own entity and should be treated as such. It's heavy, catchy and a really fun listen. It can't possibly be everyone's cup of tea but should be approached with humbled respect because it truly demands it. Once again, if you're longing for the resurrection of the Randy Rhoads era, don't waste your time. This is a different Ozzy, composed with a different producer, played by different band members in a very different time.

Scream Poster

Scream is Ozzy Osbourne's first album in three years and 10th studio album overall. The album was produced by OZZY and Kevin Churko, both of whom did the same honors for OZZY's 2007 worldwide million-seller Black Rain, the album. The multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer recorded most of the album at his Los Angeles home studio, The Bunker, and co-wrote all the songs, primarily with Churko. Notably, the album marks the first appearance of OZZY's new guitar player, Gus G. OZZY's band also features bassist Blasko, drummer Tommy Clufetos and keyboardist Adam Wakeman.
