Free Music Notes for White Chalk AlbumFree Music Review: What a surprise Hit: 5 StarsI didn't expect PJ Harvey to go in this direction, musically. And, although I didn't like the snippets I listened to on itunes right away, I still bought it because PJ Harvey knows what writing music is all about, and I trust that the album will grow on me each time I hear it. That's why I voted it 5 stars, because it is a masterpiece. The woman is a genius when it comes to singing/songwriting, no matter what she's released. Almost all her previous work has been angry, edgy and noisy, except for "Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea", where she turned really good girl on us. I actually expected "White Chalk" to follow in the footsteps of Uh Huh Her"...so when I first played the entire album yesterday, I was quite shocked and disappointed at how boring it seemed (at first). This is because I'm just not accustomed to PJ's quieted down style. "The Devil" (Track One) happens to be my favorite track on the CD because it has the most "life". As PJ tinkers away on her old piano, she tells a continuous story from start to finish, track by track. The songs follow one another continuously, which at first, may sound a little monotonous. But, if you are a true music lover, you will understand how PJ's songwriting prowess works.
Gothic in setting, PJ drops the electric guitar and has switched from low growling & hollering to soft, higher range vocal style, which is quite rare, for most of her songs feature her singing/breathing directly into the mic. But there's none of that on "White Chalk". Based on piano & voice alone, the setting is haunting, gothic and dark. It's really good "winding down and relax" music, cos the album is just so quiet. PJ is beautiful, delicate and pure on the front cover, unlike her previous cover art. Simply put on a brown background, clad in a white gown, the artwork is subtle, simple yet speaks a thousand words. I like the papersleeve packaging, just like a mini-LP cd from Japan. There's an inner sleeve with just some credits. No lyrics are available in the package, not that it's important anyway. I'd talk about the other songs, but there's not much to say about them, cos they're quite similar in their grace and angelic style. Though PJ is subdued this time around, the album is still a masterpiece and that's why I love PJ's music so much.
