Free Music Review: Not quite complete but you won't hear anything else like this!

First of all, they should have called it "Complete Chamber Music that is not for violin and guitar." There are several more CDs worth of music for those two instruments, of variable quality but mostly not terribly interesting. This set, however, goes far beyond my expectations of what Paganini Chamber Music would be. Naturally there are some pieces that are clearly meant to be enjoyed only by the people playing them-- tuneful and fun music for amateurs. However, there is a lot of music here that is more substantial than that. Some (not all) of the guitar quartets (yes there are 5 CDs of them) are extremely flashy, and the Sonatas for Violin and Bassoon (played by Salvatore Accardo by the way) are really interesting. The String Quartets I can live without, but the 10th CD is full of miscellaneous items that are intriguing and entertaining. My personal favorite of all is a set of Variations on "Nel cor piu non mi sento" for two violins and cello which are every bit as inspired and crazy as the solo violin piece.
I give this set five stars for content, even with the proviso that some of the pieces are a little silly, and as the other review states, you won't find Beethoven here. I have to go with four stars because the intonation from the violinist of the Paganini Quartet is at times simply appalling. I cannot believe that they could not have found better takes. When he's good he's very very good, but when he's bad... wow! Still, this set is worth it. You won't regret it!
