Free Music Notes for The Best of Paolo Conte

Free Music Review: This was a surprise
Hit: 5 Stars

While looking thru Pink Martini and Paris Combo music, I came across Paolo Conte. Just to be safe, I got this 'Best of' selection.

What a surprise! He is the Italian boogie-woogie man. My children are a little bit embrassed when I try to sing along in our minivan, but I don't care. This 'album' is my favorite of the year.

Free Music Review: Phat Scat
Hit: 5 Stars

Not being a fan of scat, I only enjoyed about half of this CD the first few times I listened to it. But, if you give it a few chances, I dare say every song will grow on you. Now, I even scat along to COME DI!

This CD has it all for the jazz lover! Great traditional swing-y jazz (ELISIR, BOOGIE, HAPPY FEET), easy listening jazz (SPARRING PARTNER, MAX), and some fabulous experimental stuff (GLI IMPERMEABILI, DRAGON). The musicians are incredibly talented at their craft, and Conte's singing - I use that term very loosely; it's more a rythmic speaking - is gritty, playful, and fun! I did agree with another reviewer, when they stated they liked the songs better when they didn't know what Paolo was saying. I felt the same exact way after I read the English translations. But, I just had to change outlook. Now, Conte just reminds of that great eccentric uncle every family has. Extremely entertaining, greatly talented, does his own thing, just a bit off-kilter. What's that? Uncle Paolo's singing about Lemon Ice Cream in the den again? Let's go listen, everyone!

One additional note, from the Brief Glossary of Paolo Conte in the CD insert:

"From his bar stool, he observes a romantic underworld ... where he is attracted to women whose 'pungent smells [beckon] him like an old-fashioned grocery, its doors flung open to the spring outside.'"

Now THAT is priceless. How can you not listen to the works of a man who thought that line up?? Go get this CD and enjoy!

Free Music Review: Happy Feet... ta tat ta!
Hit: 3 Stars

Great throw back to the golden age of jazz... this cd (although in italian) has more soul than just about all modern day jazz cd's. So why do i rate this CD 3 out of 5 you ask? While i don't understand italian, i had a friend of mine translate this cd for me, and thats where i was a little bit under whelmed. Great for people who don't speak Italian. Take that rating as a strong 3

Free Music Review: A must for all Jazz and Italian music lovers!
Hit: 5 Stars

Paolo Conte's music reminds me a bit of Leonard Cohen and of New Orleans jazz...Italian style. A crowd pleaser to all, Conte's music is perfect for all occasions and moods. Said from a true Italian, if you are insatiable for Italian musica and have yet to hear this guy, then you are missing out!!!

Free Music Review: Paolo Conte.
Hit: 5 Stars

Conte has an amazingly intimate style, even in his more upbeat pieces. Think of dark cabarets, late-night smokey bars, or perhaps even a cafe somewhere where a very talented patron has decided to sit in with the pianist. I think the comparisons to Waits, Cohen and Gainsbourg are due mostly to the slightly gravelly nature of his voice. My most immediate reaction was that he has taken some of Yves Montand's ideas and created something all his own. Aznavour wouldn't be too far off, either- musically speaking, that is. The lyrics are an entirely different matter- equally wonderful, but as abstract as Aznavour's are precise. In closing, all I can say is that if any of the imagery I've tried to conjure appeals to you, then you'll be as glad you bought this CD as I was.
