Free Music Review: Can do rap-rock a little better than a certain red cap......
Hit: 5 Stars

Yes, another 5-star album. I guess I only review albums I really like. ;) Oh well......

This album rocks. While Last Resort has been a victim of radio overplay, the album is truely amazing. A song by song breakdown:

Infest: Kind of sets the tone for the record. A good example of the kind of stuff that's on here. Good song.

Last Resort: As we all know, a GREAT song. If only radio and MTV hadn't wrung all the juice out of it.

Broken Home: The answer to crying, confused kids everywhere. This is possibly the best song on the CD. A song about divorce, that switches from Coby's timid singing to a painful howl. Amazing.

Dead Cell: One of their fast and hard songs. A combination of punk and metal.

Between Angels and Insects: I think this is supposed to be the next single. The only song off of Infest that doesn't deal with personal problem. Reminds me of Broken Home, although it lacks the power that Broken Home did. Still, an excellent song that holds the pissed-off high school thing that I love about P-Roach.

Blood Brothers: This song has such an amazing guitar intro. It sets you up for the whole song. The verses sound a little muddy, but the chorus and the bit at the end make it another great punk/metal screaming song that these guys use so well.

Revenge: The one song off of Infest that Coby said didn't relate to him or someone he knew. Hmm. Anyway, this one of the....weaker song on the CD, so maybe it does make a difference. Make no mistake, it's a good song, but it gets a little old after a while, and I soon found myself skipping over it.

Snakes: Very hip-hoppy in the verses, and then a good rockin' chorus. Makes up yet another part of the bulk that makes this such an awesome record.

Never Enough: I keep humming the verses to this song everyday. They're so tense yet so timid, just waiting for the chorus to angrily start thrashing.

Binge: Surprisingly, Coby uses that beautiful soft voice throughout this entire song. It has that I-really-screwed-up-and-now-look-at-me type of feel.

Thrown Away: This song is just SCREAMING with energy, like Dead Cell did. This is the ultimate I'M SO F*CKED! WHAT CAN I DO? type of song. It almost makes you cry, when it's done. Screaming, thrashing, painful vocals and overloaded guitars fittingly wrap up the album.

Tightrope: A hidden track after Thrown Away. It makes sense, as it is a slow I've-Given-Up song that feels so fragile. There is a feeling that the person in Thrown Away, after pulsing with so much emotion, has become dead, and nothing matters, anymore......

Infest is a classic in my book, and Papa Roach keeps it more real than anyone out there, *coughLimpBizkitcough*. Buy this if, like me, you have lots of emotion built up inside you. This album helps. Through the mixture of blazing hip-hop, screaming metal, and retractive softness, this album represents the blood and tears of the uglier side of problems people go through everyday.

And because Papa Roach pulls the music off so wonderfully, everyone gets the message and everyone can relate.

Buy it. Now.

Infest Poster

Japanese version of the hard rockers debut featuring the live version of 'Dead Cell', a clean version of 'Legacy' and ahidden track, 'Legacy'. These three tracks are unavailable on the US pressing. Standard jewelcase. 2000 cd release.
Papa Roach is a breed apart in the nearly overfull rap-rock arena. The Northern California-bred quartet lacks the bluster of Limp Bizkit and the political agenda of Rage Against the Machine, instead serving up an ultra-intense, highly personal brand of funk-punk-rock-rap on their stunning major-label debut. Closer in spirit to Faith No More than Korn, Papa Roach's signature sound is defined by Coby Dick's raspy, forceful vocals. Dick's pointed lyrics astutely address everything from divorce ("Broken Home") and attention deficit disorder ("Thrown Away") to alcoholism ("Binge"). Jerry Horton's memorable, melodic, and insinuating guitar lines and the band's aggro, moshable rhythms provide added weight. Papa Roach's intensity is never forced; the songs here are varied, discrete, tuneful, and cohesive. Indeed, the mellow, reggae- like "Tightrope" is as compelling as the commanding "Last Resort," making Infest one of the most arresting heavy-music debuts of 2000. -- Katherine Turman
