Free Music Review: Much to my Surprise, I Love It!
Hit: 5 Stars

Well, I had gotten LoveHateTragedy before this one, even though it came out afterwards, and that hadn't really clicked with me yet (although I think that one's great too), but I really liked Last Resort so I picked this one up. And I'm sure glad I did. Papa Roach has some great guitar riffs and some thought provoking lyrics all bottled up into 12 great songs. Here's the track-by-track breakdown:

1. Infest- Not the greatest song, many intros aren't that good, though, but this one suits the CD fine, so it's not too bad. 8/10
2. Last Resort- The reason I got this CD. It's still a great song about suicide/angst/desperation that I can listen to often. 10/10
3. Broken Home- Another great song, Coby displays his vocals here, singing about his family and how his father mistreated him as a kid, and the rapping only kicks in at the bridge. I especially like the screaming towards the end. 10/10
4. Dead Cell- Another song that you can rock your head to, a rather fast paced song, by Roach standards. Coby's vocals are stretched to the max as he's screaming for about half the song. 10/10
5. Between Angels and Insects- Yet another great song about how money and possesions shouldn't get in your way. 10/10
6. Blood Brothers- This is heard on one of the Tony Hawk games for Playstation, and while it does have a somewhat violent meaning and seems a bit awkward at times, it's still fun to listen to. 8/10
7. Revenge- I didn't really like this song at first, but now I like the beat and lyrics. It's about a relationship gone awry. 9.5/10
8. Snakes- Some people don't like this song too much, and while the lyrics are kinda lame, I just like how it all flows together. 9.25/10
9. Never Enough- Along with Binge, this is one of the songs that features no rapping. Sort of a similar theme to Last Resort, and although this one isn't as good, it still comes together nicely. 9.25/10
10. Binge- The other song with no rapping, it's about a guy who gets drunk frequently and the pain and suffering that accompanies it. Nice riffs here. 9.75/10
11. Thrown Away- It takes some time to get used to, but after that the words and music blend nicely and it becomes a very good way to end the album strongly. The screaming part at the end is very good, and this is the last rapping we see until "She Loves Me Not" on LoveHateTragedy...9.5/10
12. Tightrope- The hidden track at the end, and after Thrown Away turns into what sounds like a computer loading or something like that, this Jamacian sounding song has some deep lyrics and is a good way to end the CD. 9.25/10

So, all in all, if you like rap-rock, then this is a great CD to have in your collection. The screaming is never over done in my opinion, and while much of the verses include rapping, there is enough variety in the vocals and guitar to keep this entertaining every time you listen to it.

Free Music Review: Music Infesting Your Mind
Hit: 5 Stars

Emerging from northern California earlier this year, Papa Roach has become the latest band to infiltrate the rock world. Their first CD under a major record label, titled Infest, came out in April of 2000 on DreamWorks Records. Papa Roach combines blistering riffs with tight and diverse vocals. There's some rap, some rock, and even some reggae on this debut. The band has also added the idea of deeper lyrics, which keeps listeners hooked. The band is tight and their style works very well. We've all heard their first single "Last Resort" playing on our local modern rock stations but there's much more to this band than just that one song. Lead singer Coby Dick has an awesome style of rapping but can also sing as well. The songs on this CD tell tales of his life which he decided to tell us about and believe me; the songs are very, very personal. An example of this is the song "Broken Home". It has a catchy guitar riff effect, and lyrics that cut right to the bone of isolation, loneliness and angst. Another good song on the CD is the ever-compelling "Dead Cell". In this song, which was formed around the thought of a dead battery, the band works totally concise and Coby's lyrics actually ring out a bit better. His voice seems less raspy, while the bass player keeps the rhythm going. The guitar line is brutal, which makes it worth listening to. For the bonus track "Tightrope", P-Roach, as they are often called, takes their hardcore style and tones it down immensely to an upbeat, reggae rhythm. The guitar's delay brings the song into full mode, and Coby's lyrics are easily his most introspective and most innovative so far. The song lightens up on the angst and kicks a more positive vibe. Instead of shouting, he takes it down a notch. Which makes the song so ridiculously great. The intense strength and aggression put out on this album is incredible. Although mostly "riff based", the songs on Infest and are full of feeling and meaning, which is exactly what music is supposed to be. This album brings up a lot of important issues from suicidal feelings to dysfunctional families to drinking problems. The fact that the band can express these things musically is wonderful, and to do it so well through the venue of rock and roll. Upon listening to the CD, the lyrics and music begin to sound more and more of a cross between the creators of the rock/rap revolution, none other than Rage Against the Machine. Also, a lot of people have made connections to the Deftones, however observant musicians will notice that their beats sound like Iron Maiden. Papa Roach themselves have been on the move this past summer, most recently performing at MTV's Video Music Awards. They are planning to open for the Limp Bizkit-Eminem tour this fall, and are a possible band for Limp Bizkit's Family Values Tour.

Free Music Review: All you narrow minded musical elitists just shut up already!
Hit: 5 Stars

I am sick and tired of all this bashing of Nu-Metal! What is so bad about it? And who are you to say that its dead? I listened to this band since I was 12 years old (I am 19 now) and I never got sick of it (this alblum anyways that new stuff is junk)! If you were assumeing I am some teenager who doesnt know real music you are wrong! I like all kinds of metal! If you are going to call me a poser metal head you are wrong! I have respefct for all kinds of metal! I like stuff like Soilwork, Trivium, Dio, Nevermore, Dragonforce, and etc. etc. I like everything from classic metal, power, death, black, nu metal and beyond!

I am just sick of all this bashing of nu-metal. You have no right to judge all nu-metal fans as idiot narrow-minded teenagers! Seriously Its just like me judgeing all you narrow minded classic rockers as 35 year losers who live in their mother's basement! Because that is probably what most of you are! If you were a "true metalhead" as you call yourself surely you would have respect for all kinds of metal! If you are saying nu-metal is talentless you must be a retard! Every genre of music is talented in its own right (except for teen pop and rap.)

Seriously why bash papa roach if the Backstreet Boys just came out with a new CD? I am sure even you would rather listen to Papa Roach than listen to them. I know I would. Like I said I am tired of hearing "Nu-Metal is dead!" So Hair Metal or Glam Metal is not dead? Yeah right!. You are saying nu-metal is dead but I dont reckon the genres I just listed stayed for long now did they? Dont get me wrong I like that kind of stuff too.

As time goes by things change! Get used to it! People who were raised around different things like different stuff! I was raised around nu-metal so what do you expect? Although I do like everything else. Seriously I hear alot of people saying extremely cruel and uncalled for things about nu-metal fans and saying things like "I hope all you nu-metal fans get AIDS" or "I wont 2 kill mislef wen I heer dis!!" I think it is wrong to hate people just because they like a different genre of music than you do! So wish such a terrible thing just because I like a different kind of music than you do? You are sick! And if you are going to kill yourself just over music then you must be a retard.

So what if Papa Roach sound like every other rap metal band. Hey most hair metal bands sound exactly the same as eachother so there. Sorry about my rambleing. Now about Papa Roach. Yeah I know they sound like every other nu-metal band but hey who cares! I dont even know what I just said...

Free Music Review: This thing is perfect
Hit: 5 Stars

I've listened to this CD more times than I can count. I don't get sick of it. Every single one of their songs is great. Not only does every song come together excellently, you can really relate to some of them, and I think is you mature, you'll notice a lot of the other songs will really be written about you. Coby Dick is one of the best singers I've heard in a while. He's got the nice heavy metal/rap thing with songs like Last Resort and Dead Cell, but he's also got his toned down voice, like in Never Enough and Tightrope. Jerry Horton is one of the most creative and melodic guitarists I've ever heard, almost up to par with Mike from Incubus. He can play his instrument really well! No kidding! A lot of bands, like POD, Cypress Hill, and Korn cannot play their instruments. Korn plain blows at guitar, and I rarely hear the two guitars playing at once, which brings up the question of why they even have 2 guitarists. Horton figures out these crazy licks, like the ones in Blood Brothers and Between Angels and Insects. He's also very chord-heavy, and it adds a lot of feeling to the song, maybe more so than the lyrics. A lot of bands (like Rage) don't use power chords much, and the guitar sounds shallow because of it. Tobin Esperance is a great bassist, capable of playing your normal rock style, and even a sweet reggae-style bass line which he shows off in Tightrope. And the bass does not cover everything else up, like in Korn or Limp Bizkit. Dave Buckner can play the drums like no one's business. They play an important part in each song, but don't carry everything else, like Slipknot. I like Slipknot, but let's face it; take away the drums and you don't have anything. Papa Roach is one of the best bands I've heard, if not the best. They've matured a lot. If you listen to the great Old Friends from Young Years, you'll really notice that they have not only gotten even better at playing their instruments, but even their lyrics have improved. A lot of people may think that becoming popular is selling out, but they don't know what it means to sell out. Metallica sold out. I love those guys and they screwed the fans, but Papa Roach has not sold out. They've earned their popularity after 8 years of hard work. And they deserve it. This cd rocks, go buy it.

Free Music Review: papa roach rocks out
Hit: 5 Stars

so called "nu-metal" and "rap-rock" acts have been getting a bad rap (no pun intended) since they became popular...granted, many of them are nothing special and are boring to listen to, but some stand head and shoulders above the others...papa roach, on this release, proves their potential as one of the better bands around today...

INFEST is an album that hits hard...Jerry Hortons guitar is one of the first things that amazes me about this album...on tracks like "Blood Brothers" and "Revenge" he puts sick hooks in to go with Coby Dick's rapping...very few bands are capable of meshing well-written raps and loud, aggro guitar riffs and hooks, but Papa Roach pulls it off flawlessly...Coby's voice goes from a rap to a throaty scream on a dime, and is full of raw emotion..."Dead Cell" demonstrates some of his better screaming (hehe)...

the lyrics on this album are some of the better written amongst bands today, who claim they are angry at the world..."Broken Home" is far and away the best song written about divorce, focusing in on the pain a child in such a family feels, their confusion, as well as, in this case, blaming the father for that pain...a very emotional cut..."Last Resort", that well-known radio single, is of course about suicide, but the lyrics really make you feel desperation..."Binge" and "Snakes" are introspective songs about a jaded guy in different situations...in "Binge" Coby screams "i am on a binge/i wish things would change/wish theyd rearrange/im on a binge!"..."Between Angels and Insects" is a loud, well-written song about the problems of society, asserting "theres no money/theres no possessions/only obsession/i dont need that sh!t"...each song is written to deal w/an emotion or event and makes you feel like you yourself experienced it; the sign of a good lyricist

i cant leave out the great rhythm section, which makes Papa Roach loud and in your face right from the opening track...they play behind and in front of Hortons guitar all at once, backing him up, and yet making his riffs more aggressive by accenting them...add the rapping/screaming on top, and you have one hell of an aggro sound

anyways, check this album out, its one of the few great "rapcore" albums out there, and is a perfect mix of rapped lyrics and guitar...peace
