Free Music Review: A Down And Dirty Mid-Career Crisis
Hit: 4 Stars

After spending nearly a decade together playing their own brand of rap-rock -- as chronicled by such indie releases as "Potatoes For Christmas" and "Old Friends From Young Years" -- Papa Roach managed to break out in 2000 with the infamous hit single, "Last Resort." To avoid being pigeonholed in the floundering genre, the band decided to take a different approach with their second major-label album, 2002's "Lovehatetragedy." Together with legendary producer Brendan O'Brien (Rage Against The Machine, Stone Temple Pilots), the four men of Papa Roach seemed bound and determined to create something pure and completely different than their previous material. The question is, did it work out?

Yes and no. See, while "Lovehatetragedy" did an excellent job of breaking Papa Roach into new territory, the album itself has many weaknesses that took me by surprise. I'll admit, I've grown quite fond of it over the years (in fact, I pretty much hated it in it's day) but it still ain't perfect. Considering they had a bigger budget and a mega-producer on hand, it's shocking to hear just how muddled the sound is. Nearly every song sounds like a demo version, as if they stopped making the album halfway through and decided to just release it as is. However, the dirtier sound does work at moments, such as on the intense opener "M-80 (Explosive Energy Movement)" on which frontman Jacoby Shaddix proclaims "I'm ready to die for Rock N' Roll." Definitely an engaging song to open with. Others like "Life Is A Bullet," "Time And Time Again" and my personal favorite, "Born With Nothing, Die With Everything" work in the same vein. However, songs like "S.I.D." (a tribute to Sid of Slipknot) and "Decompression Period" go virtually nowhere and would have been better left as b-sides. To add some variety into the mix, two songs "Black Clouds" and the title track take the album in different directions. The former is an overemotional, self-loathing anthem, while the latter has a slinky, tongue in cheek style, much akin to "Tightrope," the hidden track on "Infest."

All in all, it's a rather mixed and difficult record. I've come to appreciate the raw nature of it, but I'll admit, it was also a huge turn off in the beginning. "Lovehatetragedy" is by no means perfect, but is a solid rock album, no doubt. In a way, Papa Roach did acheive their goal of moving past rap-rock, as their follow-up album, "Getting Away With Murder" took them even further past the genre and gave them even more success. Don't overlook "Lovehatetragedy" just because it was a commercial flop. There's something here any hard-rock fan can appreciate.

Hit: 4 Stars

Papa Roach publicly stated that they wanted the follow-up to their debut album, Infest, to have a much more mature tone, and on that point they rightfully succeeded. By creating a healthy mix of rock and rap-influenced-rock lead singer Jacoby Shaddix (formally Coby Dick) is able to sing more, and rap less, which, depending on your liking of Papa Roach's music, is good or bad.

To those missing the hard-rock, rap-stunts aspect of Infest, you will find a much older band with much more melody. lovehatetragedy's first single, "She Loves Me Not," is a pop-inspired romp through a troubled relationship which feels somewhat alienated on the CD. The real winning tracks come in the form of "Time and Time Again," which has been recently featured in Pepsi Blue commercials, and the title track "lovehatetragedy."

As a prerequisite for most bands in this day and age, Papa Roach decided to feature a cover track of the Pixies "Gouge Away." As an example of the new emotional tone to Papa Roach, the song "Dark Clouds," Jacoby proclaims:

"This is making me crazy / These black clouds following me / So I look for signs of light / But rarely I see them."

You can see that things are much more organized, it almost feels as though the album was designed with a clear mind, instead of the disjointed Infest which stuck with a general tone, but featured ideas all over the place. With lovehatetragedy, things appear more concise with several ongoing themes present in each song including references to skin, depression, and love.

With a more emotional sound album, Papa Roach no longer becomes mixed in the shuffle of "hardcore bands" who scream, whim, and come off with a bad attitude. While the latest addition is not quite punk, it's not quite nu-metal, and it's not quite straight rock and roll, it does feature elements from all three of those genres and melds them together in a sometimes melody filled, sometimes beat filled rock session that brings Papa Roach to the surface of MTV wannabe's and rejects. Not saying that Papa Roach is wanting to be on MTV, it just may be better to remove them from that mindset and let them creatively explore their music rather than think about what some inane VJ thinks.

As a follow-up to Infest, lovehatetragedy proves that the sophomore curse isn't always as bad as some band's make it out to be. Even with the more emotion filled music with may drive off longtime, hardcore Papa Roach fans, this CD proves that bands get better with age and maturity.

Free Music Review: What a welcome evolution this was!
Hit: 4 Stars

Ok, at the time of its release I absolutely loved Infest. I had been a fan of Papa Roach from their earlier releases ("Old Friends From Young Years" and "5 Tracks Deep") and was hooked by their aggressive raprock efforts. That said, years later, if that same album had been released today I'm confident I would be completely turned off by it. The "nu-metal" sound has grown so rediculously tedious and over played that another album in that vein would have been career suicide.

Luckily for us, as well as Papa Roach, the band took a different, and much more mature, approach in this new album. As a general rule Jacoby has totally dropped the rap/sing style of his past efforts and has instead opted for a more anthemic singing style that definitely suprises in it's effectiveness. Granted there are a few tracks on here where this isn't always the case, particularly in the first single "She Loves Me Not" which was written during the "Infest" years and stands out as obviously the most immature and, in my opinion, worst track here. But for the most part the vocals are very well executed and take this band to a new level that they never would have attained without this change.

The rest of the band is along for the ride too, and I'm glad to say they've changed as well. While there is still the mosh pit intensity that was found on "Infest", the band truly shines here in their voyage into the softer and darker realm. "Decompression Period", "Black Clouds" and "Singular Indesctrutable Droid" are perfect examples of Papa Roache's new sound and are by far some of my favorites on this release. They are much more dynamic and moving than just about everything the band had done before.

Papa Roach has definitely earned itself 4 stars for, if nothing else, their ability to mature and grow into an impressive rock band rather than get stuck in their teen angst years of father hatred and rapping. Though I can't stress enough how annoyed I am by the weak lyrics in "She Loves Me Not", and the really stupid album cover (I can't stand the little devil horn hand), two little set-back can't possibly take away my overall enjoyment of this release. If you didn't like Papa Roach before definitely give them another chance with no preconceived opinions! Hopefully this is the start of a series of great albums.
