Free Music Review: Very well done, but we are still yet to see the best!
Hit: 4 Stars

Jacoby Shaddix starts off screaming in the roudy song M-80 that's the lead track in their sophomore release, LoveHateTragedy. I was thinking maybe all the tracks will be like Infest, since M-80 sounded a bit like the first song off that CD as well! Boy was I wrong! Other than 'She Loves Me Not', there is no rapping. And while the band gets along without it, and Jerry Horton, Tobin Esperance, David Buckner, as well as their vocalist Jacoby have improved their musicianship and sound, I feel something lacking. The reason being, they dropped the rap and Shaddix's rapping voice had a great edge to it that really adds some feeling to a song! Another thing I noticed is the lack of really hard-hitting riffs right from the start. M-80 is good, as well as Tracks 4, 7, 9, 10, and even 11. But songs like Life is a Bullet and Time and Time Again have either there riffs messed up (there's a trill on the end of the LIAB riff) or its simply not really cool to listen to. Especially when you have tracks like Last Resort, Dead Cell, Thrown Away, and the extremely heavy starting of Revenge to compare to from Infest. Lyrics-wise, while Jacoby improved his voice and has more emotion, his lyrics lack the punch as well as the complexity (other than Code of Energy) of his former works. For example, "What is the reason/There's millions of reasons." Then you have a rap on Infest which is like: "I've seen it happen/Backhand brand to face smackin'/Definite disorder now his mindset is blackened." The latter lines have much more flow while Jacoby, singing, is trying too hard to sing and fit that flow so he can't use that complexity he once had in his songwriting.

SO:

Therefore Papa Roach should endeavour, in their next album, to bring back SOME of their rap/rock style. Bring back songs like Infest, Thrown Away, and Between Angels and Insects. Even a 'hybrid' song like Broken Home or Revenge. But also keep the rock material present in LoveHateTragedy like Decompression Period, Code of Energy, and Life is a Bullet. If they combine the ideas of both of these terrific albums then Papa Roach's next release will rival works like Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory!

Free Music Review: Stepping Up
Hit: 4 Stars

Papa Roach is a welcomed oasis in the vast desert wasteland that is the mainstream music scene. They seem to be one of the few mainstream bands who actually cares more about their music than the money. Think about it, they never really gained a great deal of popularity. They had one big hit, and then practically dropped off the face of the earth. But despite that, they have continued to work hard on their music, and managed to crank out this brand new release. I'm feeling a bit prophetic here. In my review for "Infest", I said that I hoped on the next album they would lay off the rapping, and make something that was less commercial and more mature. Now of course, when I said this, I never half expected it to actually happen, but much to my surprise, they did just that.

While not exactly groundbreaking, "Lovehatetragedy" is a far more mature album than the debut was. The rapping is almost completely gone (that little part in "She Loves Me Not" is the only rap on the entire CD), there is no turntabling, no stupid white boy rap lingo, not nearly as much cursing, and no riffs ripped off from Iron Maiden. In short, they have progressed in a big way. You've got a solid album full of heavy riffs, great vocals, heartfelt lyrics, and even a couple of solos. The best song is definitely "Black Clouds", but just about every song here is pretty good. "Singular Indestructible Droid" is kind of stupid, but really not that bad.

All in all, a pretty decent album. I didn't expect much, but I am pleasantly surprised. If they continue to grow in this direction, this band has quite the bright future. I'm sure the Limp Bizkit fans will be disappointed with this, but well, who cares about them anyway? Fans of good music will appreciate the change. If you like this, you need to check out a band called Thrice. It's similar to this, but WAY better. But hey, Papa Roach is doing a good job. Thanks for meeting my requests guys, I hope you'll continue to make some good music.

Free Music Review: He's sick of his skin
Hit: 4 Stars

Everything about Papa Roach is cliche. The lyrics most of the times are tired and tried, the riffs sound used, the melodies are only halfway respectable, and very rarely does this band surprise. Despite all that, Lovehatetragedy is a good CD. Papa Roach don't really build from where we saw them with Infest, nor do they decline. Basically, Lovehatetragedy is a continuation of Infest, an Infest Pt. 2 if you will.

Infest was a great rap/rock record, this I will acknowledge, and it would've been immature to think they would top that with this release. They didn't, and I don't mind one bit because I've enjoyed this CD on many ocassions. What is different with this CD is that there are more melodic moments scattered throughout. Decompression Period features great singing from Jacoby, as does Black Clouds. On the other side though, the heaviness is still there. M-80 (Explosive Energy Movement) is probably among one of the band's heaviest songs. Life Is A Bullet and Time And Time Again follow somewhat in the same vein, with Life Is A Bullet no doubt coming out the winner.

Of the two 'bonus' tracks, Never Said It is much better than Gauge Away. Gauge Away seems even below Papa Roach's standards quite frankly. Never Said It features a great opening riff accompanied by great vocal execution, a nice closer really.

My favorite songs are Life Is A Bullet, Decompression Period, She Loves Me Not, Singular Indestructible Droid, and Never Said It. With as cheap as this CD is now there's no doubt that it's worth the money. And besides, the baby on the cover alone is worth the price. If you liked Papa Roach before this CD, this won't change your mind, good or bad. Sounds like Infest, flows like Infest, it's just a good CD.

Free Music Review: solid album
Hit: 4 Stars

The guys went for a different path on their follow up album 'LoveHateTragedy'. For the most part, gone are the yo yo banters of Infest, replaced with better arangements (Code of Energy, Black Clouds), tighter more intrespective lyrics (Single Indestructible Droid, Time and Time Again) and even some punk pathos attitude (m-80).

This is a much better direction for the guys to go in. The album is sonicaly produced well, Jacoby's front antics are solid and the fact that he's doing more singing instead of rapping gives the songs a larger life. Jerry Horton has to be one of my fav "riff" guitarists. He comes up with the most punching simple rhythms on this album which are very infectious for the listner. So many of these younger bands just don't have that spark that he does. The guy does brilliant work, and the other band members have groove and talent to either focus on the songs or shine when they need to.

Their classic sound and wounded angst found so common on their last work is still present, particularly in songs like "She Loves Me Not", and "Born with nothing, die with everything". These songs almost seem like a continuation of Last Resort and, Between Angels and Insects.

Needless to say it is a good solid rocking album, not perfect, but very well put together, and fun to listen to. Looking forward to a next release.

Also I just came back from seeing the band live and they put on a good show. Go and see them if you have a chance.

Free Music Review: Good album, but originality was left by the side of the road
Hit: 4 Stars

If you heard Papa roach's last effort Infest, then you should know what to expect, no surprises here.
Songs are well written and the guitar riffs are a little more complex than the last album.
Dark themes make up most of this album, depression, dysfuncion,
love, hate and of course tragedy.
all of us have already heard "she loves me not", but there are plenty of other good songs on here as well.
Decompression period, time and time again, and born with everything die with nothing, are in my opinion the best songs on here.
If you like the last album you will definitely like this, if you havent heard the last cd, buy it first then give this one a try.
Not for everybody, very dark and powerful material.
the reason i gave it 4 stars is because of the lack of originality, the industry is overloaded with half assed clones of
the same hard rock(nu-metal) mold, and even though they pull that sound off they still fall in with the other guys.
I have high hopes for this band though, i think they will be able to be great later on down the road.
a good album and definitely worth buying.
