Free Music Notes for Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo Syndrome

Free Music Review: Parliament's absolute best
Hit: 5 Stars

This is Parliament's best album, and essential for fans of all interest levels. The album's three extended jams ("Bop Gun," "Sir Nose D'voiddoffunk," and "Funkentelechy") and the #1 hit "Flashlight" each have their own unique and definitive groove, and I'd be tempted to rank all four among Parliament's top 10 songs. "Sir Nose" is particularly notable since it is a strong candidate for their best song, introducing arguably Clinton's most important character, and yet is inexplicably omitted from most "Best Of" compliations. The retro ballad "Wizard of Finance" and relatively short "Placebo Syndrome" are understandably overshadowed by the surrounding titans, but fill their slots perfectly.

Along with "Mothership Connection," I'd give this album a perfect 5 stars. "Clones of Dr. Funkenstein" and "Motor Booty Affair" aren't quite the same level of perfection, but also highly recommended.

Free Music Review: pure funk
Hit: 5 Stars

This is my favorite Parliament cd. I wish they would re-release it complete with a fold out poster of "Sir Nose" and reprint of the original comic book from the lp release. Please do Parliament some justice and re-master the whole catalog!

Free Music Review: Truly powerful and dense
Hit: 5 Stars

1975's Mothership Connection and 1976's The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein established George Clinton as a major commercial force in the United States, yet also showed them tigtening and intensifying their sound to produce some really powerful workout on songs like "Unfunky UFO".

With "Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo Syndrome", Parliament repeat the formula of a concept album about the war between funk (Funkentelechy) and the antifunk (the "Placebo Syndrome"). The amazing thing is that from the opening track "Bop Gun (Endangered Species)" the band plays even more intensely than they ever did before. its as if far more horns and bass guitars were playing with twice the density of notes, and the really catchy rhythms drive the opening track for the full eight minutes. The ballad "Wizard of Finance" returns to more "classic" would but its touching beauty means it loses nothing, as does the dreamy, sad "Placebo Syndrome" (which I originally heard as "tropical syndrome" and laugh at having done so because I hate hot weather) which features some really quiet, beautiful vocals.

The real gems here, however, are the two ten-minute epics "Sir Nose D'Void of Funk" and "Funkentelechy". The first of these begins with an eerie announcement and then moves into a long series of familiar childhood tales ("ba ba black sheep/have you any wool", "three blind mice") that works remarkably well because the voices so often sound like they're from children. "Funkentelechy" has fewer synthesisers but the powerful horns and drums that outstrip anything on a previous P-Funk record, together with Clinton's really memorable lyrics and the variety of voices throughout the piece from preachy to mysterious and touching, make this one of the most outstanding long songs of the 1970s. At no point over its eleven minutes does "Funkentelechy" become boring or predictable.

All in all, P-Funk never sounded so tight, energetic and emotional as they did on "Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo Syndrome". It is the pinnacle of Clinton's lofty ambitions that began at the beginning of the 1970s.

Free Music Review: P-F unk Live Aftermath !
Hit: 5 Stars

I was sixteen years old and after hearing parliment/funkadelic [tear da roof off, undisco kidd, and dr funknstein on da radio,I knew that this band was'nt the average band. And the visual effects of a funkadelic album at dat time was out of dis world. Then I was cloned when I was tookn hostage by da p-funk earth tour album[and i was buzz-up too!] I knew then that the next album had to be a portall to the next time.I've seen parliment/funkadelic in chicago '79' funkfest. it was a good concert, but it could of been great with bootsy there and maybe under 90 degrees it was hot.The funkentelechy album is truly the last p-funk album before parliment/funkadelic disbanded.Peace to Glen Goins and Eddie Hazel.

Free Music Review: Total P-Funk Package
Hit: 5 Stars

This is George and the Funk Mob at the height of their game. Fat, funky baselines, heavy grooves and some of the funniest phrases ever uttered over music. I just wish the CD included the Overton Lloyd comic book and the Sir Nose poster that you got with the album back in the day...
