Free Music Notes for Greatest Hits by Pat BenatarFree Music Review: Great singer, great sound, great hits Hit: 5 Stars
Wow! Capitol finally gets it right with this jam packed collection of the Mighty Mite's hits. They fall 10 seconds short of the 80 minute cd limit. They did such a great job I traded in my copy of her 2 disc 'All Fired Up' anthology for this. Awesome sound all around. I heard instruments in these songs I never even knew were there.
Pat's pipes sound better than ever. She can sing the hell out of anything! She has been criminally overlooked for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Her band is a bunch of crack shots, especially her husband Neil Giraldo. The man is Mr. Versatile. And even though he drums on only 2 tracks, Glen Alexander Hamilton desrves some sort of enshrinement for his playing on "Heartbreaker".
Yes, some of the tracks are the single versions, but they're the version I've always heard on the radio. Every song deserves to be here; I like that they even included "Precious Time". The next step for Capitol would be to remaster her entire catalog; her 'Crimes of Passion' album only being availabe as an import is... criminal.
Don't delay; buy it today.
p.s. For those who complain she's a hypocrite for putting out "Sex As a Weapon", watch the video; she damns herself as well as others who've used their looks to push product.
Also, with following "Hell Is for Children" after "Hit Me with You Best Shot as being tasteless -- listen to the lyrics! Pat's singing METAPHORICALLY in "Hit Me.."
Free Music Review: The best single-disc Pat CD period! Hit: 5 Stars
Pat Benatar is a true living legend, a superstar in the 80's who has been making great songs, albeit to unfortunate smaller audiences, through the 90's and today.
After many tries, EMI has finally released a single disc collection of Pat's hits that is right on the money. 1989's Best Shots was a big seller but unfortunately skipped a number of essential hit singles, then in the mid-90's, we got Heartbreaker: 16 Classic Performances. In the interval time, she's released a 2 disc collection in 1994 called All Fired Up, and a box set in 1999 called Synchronistic Wanderings, which is a fantastic package. However, if you love Pat's music but aren't about to part with $40 for a three-disc set (and All Fired Up has been deleted), Best Shots was the best option until now.
Capitol Records has remastered the classics of Pat's career, they sound better now than they ever have before, and assumed 20 tracks onto the generically titled "Greatest Hits". But rest assured, this is not a generic package.
Nine of the twenty tracks have been edited, but all is forgiven when you consider the cd runs for 79:47.
Pat's done some later songs that were great, and while I would've loved to have seen Somebody's Baby on here, truth be told, it wasn't a "hit".
If you get the chance, see Pat in concert, she and husband Neil Geraldo are great live.
Free Music Review: Treat Her Right! Miss Pat's Best Collection. Hit: 5 Stars
PROS:
"Treat Me Right," "You Better Run," "La Bel Age," "Looking For A Stranger" & "Sex As A Weapon" are ALL included here. ALL we're always left off of every single disc compilation I've ever seen. The delightful "One Love (Lion's Song)" is also present. (The inclusion of "La Bel Age"--by far my favorite Benatar tune--earns this disc it's 5th star.) The remastering is truly first class. Sounds excellent! Current & past female singers give testimonials in the cool liner notes (which include chart positions, dates, albums of origin, etc.) This is the only Benatar disc most of us will ever need.
CONS:
Some of the tracks are single edits (which is to be expected with 20 songs). The only one that is noticibly chopped up is "...Battlefield." However, it is the same single edit that has been played on the radio since 1983. As others have mentioned, the disc only covers the years 1979-1989. But it does a nice job cataloguing Pat's most successful era. The only odd selection here is "Precious Time" (which clocks in at nearly 6 minutes). It's a good song with a nice guitar solo, but I don't remember it from 1981. I would have dropped it, included the long version of "Battlefield" (which was Pat's defining MTV moment) and maybe "I Need A Lover" from the first album, or some other well known track.
Free Music Review: THE BEST Pat Benatar compilation ever!. Hit: 5 Stars
From the many countless compilations that Chrysalis has released over the course of 15 years..this is the best one. It compiles her better singles along with other key album tracks. As a fan of Pat Benatar, I've always found it hard to recommend a good compilation to people who ask me "which "greatest hits" CD should I buy?".
I'm particularly happy because this compilation includes 3 of my favorite Pat Benatar songs.."La Bel Age" "Sex As A Weapon" and "Ooh Ooh Song". Alof of the times, these compilations exlude these 3..I'm glad they're all together here along with her other singles!
The only complaint that I have with this CD is the edit of "Love Is A Battlefield". They could have made a proper edit that was 3:30 seconds long without having to get rid of the instrumental breakdown. They simply faded the song out which I found annoying. I could have made them the edit if they wanted me to, as I'm an audio engineer.
I will never like "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", but I understand that it was one of her biggest pop hits so it's not like I can complain about its inclusion here. But the rest of the tracks are fantastic and I highly recommend everyone who isn't already familiar with Pat's material to buy this CD if they're looking for a taste of La Benatar.
Free Music Review: All Hail The First Lady Of Rock! Hit: 5 Stars
I strongly believe that Pat Benatar is the reigning queen of rock and roll (with the Wilson sisters from Heart coming in a close second). And this is a woman who truly deserves a concise and comprehensive retrospective of her career. Well, after years of flimsy best of's (anyone remember "Best Shots"?), Pat Benatar has finally gotten a definitive anthology with the 20 song "Greatest Hits".
If you're only interested in buying only one Pat Benatar cd, than this is it. This cd has everything a beginning or casual fan should have, including roaring rock anthems such as "Heartbreaker", "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", "Hell Is For Children", "Shadows Of The Night", "We Belong" and my personal favorite "All Fired Up". This cd also includes "Treat Me Right" and "Le Bel Age", two highly underrated tracks that had been left all hits collection until now. The exeption is "Very Best Of 1 & 2", which had "Treat Me Right" but inexplicably left off "Hell Is For Children".
The booklet is exremely well done, complete with an essay by Gillian G. Garr as well as singers like Martina McBride and Tori Amos talking about how Pat blazed a path for female rockers. This is absolutely excellent cd that anyone who has any taste in music should definitely own.
