Free Music Review: A Personal Favorite of Mine for 30 yrs.
Hit: 5 Stars

I can remember seeing this album all over stores in early 1980 and I knew it was quickly becoming a best-seller. I didn't pay it much attention until "We Live For Love/Rated X" debuted on the local Top 40 in April as a double-sided hit. It eventually reached #9 in June, and spent 16 weeks on the chart. They were ranked as #51 on the Top 100 of 1980.

In July 1980, my 11-year-old self was the proud owner of what I perceived as quite a mature purchase for someone my age. From the first listen, I was amazed at how consistent this album was; not a bad track in the bunch. One side was as good as the other, and several tracks were even better than the hit singles.

A pounding drum beat and smoking guitar licks open the album with "Heartbreaker", one of the most arresting songs ever to start an LP with.

Pat's vocals alternate from raspy to positively angelic thoughout. The guitar in the middle builds to a dramatic spine-tingling climax, and finally a "rush-to-the finish" ending. **** stars

Things slow down a notch for the John Cougar-cover "I Need a Lover". I think she sings it just as well as the original. *** stars

"If You Think You Know How to Love Me" has a gritty feel and shotgun-like drumming throughout. By the time keyboards underscore Pat's vocals on the chorus near the end, it's soaring. **** stars

The slinky, slightly spooky title track has a mesmerizing bassline and Pat sounds more laid-back, until she gets to the amazing gospel-like zenith near the end. This song also practically soars before it's bassline fades out just exactly as it opened. **** stars

A quiet piano deceivingly opens "My Clone Sleeps Alone". However, this is no pretty ballad. It's one of the most powerful numbers on the album. The razor-sharp guitar and drumming are right on the mark. I thought Blondie's Clem Burke was my favorite drummer, but Glen Alexander Hamilton deserves special mention for his work on this entire album. **** stars

"We Live For Love" is of course one of the two big hit singles from the LP. Pat's operatic vocals contast beautifully with the raw garage-band sound of the players. Thankfully, the single version of this song was used on the CD pressings. The original LP version had a slightly different mix, with synths replacing most of the guitar licks. As a result the song lost a lot of its "bite". The superior mix is the one we hear on this release. **** stars

"Rated X" always reminded me of Nick Gilder's "Hot Child in the City", though distinctive enough to stand on its own merit. This is the kind of song that makes you wish you were driving around in a convertible. **** stars

A quiet keyboard/guitar intro brings us to "Don't Let It Show". Though this one doesn't explode into something more exciting like "My Clone Sleeps Alone", it's perhaps the best showcase for Pat's breathtaking vocals, though my least favorite track. *** stars

From the quietest track to the best rocker on the album; "No You Don't" opens with slashing guitar and wicked drums, then becomes a ticking time-bomb during each of the verses until Pat curses out her dismissive, unattentive lover in the chorus. The structure of this song reminds me of The Who's "I Can See For Miles". We get a mid-song guitar solo until all hell breaks loose for the final chorus. **** stars

We get to catch our breath as what sounds like a car alarm signals the piano intro of "So Sincere", which, once it warms up reminds me of the second part of Alice Cooper's "Halo of Flies". The stop-and-start structure is interesting and the song ends the LP on a good note. *** stars

So, of an album consisting of ten tracks, 7 of them I would rate 4 stars (out of 4) and the remaining three songs 3 stars (out of 4).

This is an excellent album from start to finish, it's been a favorite of mine for 30 years now and anyone wanting to appreciate Pat Benatar should start right here.
