Free Music Notes for Day TripFree Music Review: Metheny Stretches Hit: 5 Stars
OK, I admit to being one of those Metheny fans who like those similarly afflicted by Bob Dylan would probably go thru the man's garbage to discover what secret gems might be deposited there, given the opportunity. That being said, I haven't followed Metheny everywhere, I'm still not ready for "Song X" and the "Orchestrion" concept left me a little cold, so perhaps I have some objectivity. This album though, is truly special. A unique selection of tunes that are stretched and augmented by the stellar talents of Sanchez and McBride. For me, "Calvin's Keys" and "I'll Take the Red One" are stand out tracks with each offering something new and different to the Metheny repertoire.
Free Music Review: Similar, yet improved and refreshing, sound Hit: 5 Stars
This album is ostensibly very similar in concept to, say, Metheny's Trio 99->00 album, but yet it's not the same. I find this recording to sound fresher, more uplifting, more energetic, more clearly and crisply captured.
The compositions, as another reviewer mentioned, don't strike me as very memorable. I would generally find that to be a point of flaw, but in this case, the improvisations and chord changes are so pleasant to listen to that I don't really miss superb head melodies.
If you've already got some similar recordings from Metheny, you might not feel a desire to get this one too, but then again, you might be surprised.
Free Music Review: Another masterpiece from the master! Hit: 5 Stars
Pat does it again. This is Awesome work here. Great jazz indeed. I was fortunate to catch the live concert last October and all I can say is WoW!
I sure hope they release the live version on DVD so I can relive that night. The song "When we were friends" is worth the price of the CD alone.
That song is so sweet, it almost brought me to tears. Tears of joy that is.
I'm glad I preordered my CD so I was able to download the music today. Hope I'm one of the 50 lucky ones that get Pat's autograph.
Pat keep up the good work bro. I can't wait to see you again.

Free Music Review: Best Thing in Years from PM Hit: 5 Stars
Guitarist Metheny and bassist McBride are the well-known members of this trio, but it is drummer Sanchez who makes the most indelible impression with his incredibly energetic and flavorful playing. What a dynamo! Although Metheny's past couple of recordings with the Pat Metheny Group have tended toward the grandiose, this trio setting strips the arrangements down to a more pure jazz style that gives all three musicians an opportunity to shine. The end result is a pure feast for the ears, the best thing that Metheny has done in several years.
Free Music Review: A Very Good CD Hit: 5 Stars
I don't regard this CD as a ho hum effort at all. I think the writing and musicianship are top notch. People who think the music lacks inspiration may be expecting something more akin to the Lyle Mays collaborations. These recordings are more layered and more lushly produced. They are also more commercial. I am just as satisfied with the straight ahead trio music on Day Trip. If your taste runs toward bop this CD is the ticket.
