Free Music Review: The Godfather of Masculine HI-NRG

There's some carping here and there about what's omitted from this collection and the fact that some of the recordings are edits of the originals. Pshaw! To the casual listener or listener exposed to Cowley's genius for the first time, this collection is an excellent overview. Some tracks, like "Get a Little" and "Do You Wanna Funk" are brilliant re-edits of the originals and stand qualitatively on their own. Cowley was a hard-working genius, way ahead of his time as he patched together sounds manually in his pioneering work with synthesizers way before programs and midis could punch up sounds at the touch of a finger. No one has ever replicated Cowley's sound despite scores of pale imitators such as Man "Heatstroke" Parrish and Man 2 Man's Paul "Male Stripper" Zone. I heard "Menergy" on a dance radio station in early 1981 and immediately ran out to the closest dance music store to buy the 12". Here was a man who musically moved the dance floor with a sonic sound unheard of before and at the same time managed to "masculinize" disco for the gay multitudes who were then slightly tired of the string-laden "pretty" songs that had been the main stay of the gay DJ. Cowley was out front and outright with his sexuality and music...as time went on, he broadened his appeal to include a pop sensibility that reached beyond the gay ghetto. What this man could have accomplished had he lived...for certain, hi-nrg as a genre may not have fallen into disfavor and supplanted by the house stranglehold on dance music we've seen for the last 20 years. It's time there was a tribute project to Patrick's genius and the release of several of his unreleased tracks from the Megatone vault.
