Free Music Review: My (Elementary) Motto: Good, Better, Best -Never let it rest

... and Patti hasn't (let it rest) in "Land." Having finally received "Land," it is all that I expected ... AND more. ... Such is the zeal of a true Patti Smith follower. "Land" is still a bargain. I just hope it is not Patti's last album.
I must admit, I am unsure regarding people's concentration on (1974) "Piss Factory." Is it the sensationalism, the title, the lyrics, the music or a mixture of all of the above? Whilst the track is great, I wouldn't buy it "just to say 'Hey, I have Piss Factory. Wanna come hear it? '" Too American Pie-ish for me!
Patti has been part of my life since the mid-70's. She is 10+ years older than me but I regard her as a role model for how to conduct my life. if anyone bothered to check out the biog' details I provided in my previous review, you'll see life has not been too kind to her. She was widowed young (with two kids) but came back "fighting" and better than ever.
Her music and lyrics shift constantly between "head banging rock" (which I need driving up the freeway) to quiet, sensuous, almost lullabies (which calm me during peak hour traffic and the stresses of my day-to-day life).
Patti (doubt whether you'll read this- might send it to Avista, your record company), we love you and we love your music. Don't stop the music. You get *even* better as you get more mature in years.
Taking the words right out of your mouth, from your CD as it plays here in the middle of the night in Sydney, "People have the Power."
In this world of madness and violence, perhaps some of us who object to its conduct need to listen to the words of Patti ... (From People have the Power" ...
"I was dreaming in my dreaming ... People have the power to redeam the work of fools, from the meak the graces shower is decreed the people rule. People have the power. People have the power, People have the power. People have the power ... People have the power, People have the power ... People have the power, People have the power. ... People have the power, People have the power, people have the power ... the power to dream, to rule, to rustle the upfront fools, when it's decreed that people rule, then it's decreed that people rule ...People have the power, *then* we have the power ... People have the power ..."
The "people" must now take up the fight to have Patti Smith inducted into the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" *next up.* She is owed that *at least*.
Patti keep on doing *it* for yourself and for "the people." You get *even* better (don't we all) with age and experience.
Readers/ Listeners: Buy this album or regret it forever.
I own everything she has on CD and regret nothing. I just hope it's not her last album. She has SO much more to say and to give.

In some ways, singer-songwriter Patti Smith seems an unlikely choice for a full-bore anthology. After all, she's had only one charting single with "Because the Night." Even at that time, most people probably were more familiar with Gilda Radner's spot-on parody of her on Saturday Night Live than with Smith herself. Yet her influence both on the fledgling NYC punk scene and as a protofeminist poet renders her something of an American counterculture icon. As such, Land (1975-2002) serves to frame an uncompromising career spanning four decades. Split over two discs and featuring 31 tracks and almost two-and-a-half hours of music, Land begins with a survey of Smith's studio albums, relying most heavily on 1978's Easter. All the greats are here--"Dancing Barefoot," "People Have the Power," "Gloria," "Rock 'n' Roll Nigger," "Frederick," and of course, "Because the Night," plus a newly recorded version of Prince's "When Doves Cry," one of two songs cut specifically for this collection. The second disc is where fans--who were solicited for track selection input via gigs and the Web--get the goods. Early demos, among them 1974's coveted "Piss Factory," plus two other pre-Horses recordings, "Redondo Beach" and "Distance Fingers," kick things off. What follows is a batch of previously unreleased live recordings--"Dead City," "Spell," "Boy Cried Wolf"--most captured during a 2001 tour through the U.S. and Europe, and studio outtakes. Smith herself helped remaster the recordings while stacking the accompanying booklet with fans' photos and the like. Land probably won't spark a Smith renaissance, but loyalists can marvel at an artist who's never turned a fast buck by easing up on the sweat, tears, hunger, and integrity that inform every one of these tracks. --Kim HughesAlternative Rock Music CDs
