Free Music Notes for 1000 KissesFree Music Review: A true poetic gem. Hit: 5 Stars
I have been a fan of Patty's since I first heard a clip of Let Him Fly back before Living with Ghosts came out. I don't own Flaming Red, I have heard it and I think its a little too studio. She seemed to have detached from her roots a bit on that album. There are several wonderful songs on FR that I like better live than on album. I was so excited when I got word of Silver Bell's release I even marked the tenative release date on my calender. When I heard they wern't releasing it I was so bummed. Then I heard she was coming out with 1,000 kisses I ran to my local store the day it was released and bought it. It as been playing constantly ever since. The highlights from the album, in my opinion, are: Nobody's crying (my favorite), Rain, Stolen Car, Be Careful, and Tomorrow Night. The song Nobody's Crying gave me solace through a horrible breakup. I still tear up when I hear the line "The long night turns into a couple of long years of me walking around and round this trail of tears" (Nobody's Crying) If you cannot relate to all the songs on this album you should go to the doctor and have him make sure you still have a heart. I wouldn't say this album is better than Living with Ghosts but, it is pretty darn close. If you truely love music you will fall in love with Patty's haunting voice and poetic lyrics. If you haven't bought this album, what are you waiting for? When was the last time you spent less that 20 dollars and got years and years of pleasure from it? Support real music and real artists!
Free Music Review: Essential Patty Griffin Hit: 5 Stars
Patty Griffin has strokes of brilliance on every album. She has never made a bad album. But 1000 Kisses remains her finest work. Her vocals are fuller and richer than on her previous albums. Her lyrics are solid and insightful. The album has a consistent musical theme that her previous work only touched on.
There's no denying that there's nothing cheerful about 1000 Kisses, but it's beautiful in its sorrow. It explores love and loss in depth. It takes multiple viewpoints. It looks at life unfulfilled.
Rain, the album's opening track, is a dark, brooding song. The pain and the desire for closure give it a stark realism. Chief is a story from her childhood about the daily life of an ex soldier and how it compares to her own. Stolen Car, a Bruce Springsteen song, is a tender look at a man who's just lost the woman he loved and the life he thought he would have. Making Pies is the story of an older woman whose best days are behind her and who dedicates her life to her sister's family, volunteer work, and making pies. Be Careful could either be seen as Patty Griffin relating to other women, or a man relating to women. Either way, it's touching. Long Ride Home is one of the most obviously sad songs, about a man returning home from the funeral of his wife of 40 years. Nobody's Crying is a classic breakup song. Tomorrow Night asks the classic question again, "will you still love me tomorrow?" Mil Besos and Reprise are a cover in Spanish and an instrumental, both drawing the album to a relaxing end.
Free Music Review: Breathless Hit: 5 Stars
I saw Patty Griffin open for Shawn Colvin just around the time Living With Ghosts came out. She blew me away. Every hair on my body standing on end. She is truely one of the most gifted vessels of music ever born. I saw Patty several times during the period that her old record company was dealying her release of Silver Bell. I was dissapointed over and over again each time it was delayed. Sorely missed for me is the song "Top of the World". I heard her sing it for the first time in Sedona, AZ opening for Jackson Browne. Again, another unbelievable heart felt masterpiece. O.K., 1000 Kisses. I rushed to the store on the 9th popped it in my CD player in my car and again, I was blown away. It is an absolutely the most seamless display of melodic, angelic soaring, heart felt emotional, life affirming music I've personally ever heard. The song Rain is another piece of pop magic that is smarter and more beautiful than anything currently on the radio. Patty Griffin deserves her star. I am hopeful every day that the music industry will begin to embrace such gems as Patty rather than the standard teenager, uninspired nonsense that is making kids rich and sending record companies scrambling to find the next 10 year old sensation. Sorry, I'm on my soapbox. If you haven't heard Patty you must buy all of her three CD's. Starting with 1000 Kisses is your best bet. Thank you Dave Mathews for ATO Records good sense to sign this gifted artist. I look forward to hearing her music for years to come.
Free Music Review: 2002 Messages 'ALBUM OF THE YEAR' Hit: 5 Stars
Good things come to those who wait. After wondering what in the world the good folks at A & M Records were doing when they dropped Griffin from their roster I was delighted to receive this gem for broadcast on "Messages", my singer/songwriter radio show on WFCF 88.5 FM. Thank you ATO Records for picking up this tremendously talented writer and singer. Patty's voice is honey-coated barbed wire and her writing shows an uncanny ability to isolate the razor edge of the most mundane things in life. From the resignation of "Makin' Pies" to the desperate "Nobody's Crying" and the harrowing "Chief", Patty's evocative voice dares you to live the fragments of lives that she paints in her songs. "1000 Kisses" is much more akin to "Living With Ghosts" than "Flaming Red" stylistically, so if you prefer Patty's rock sound you may initially feel less than enthusiastic about this album. Give it time. Before too long you'll find this album superior in many ways to both previous releases. There is more emotion in the songs on this album than in a day's worth of commercial radio. It is NOT background music: it DEMANDS (and deserves) your full attention. If you're ready for an emotional journey rather than music you can happily ignore let Patty be your guide and you won't ever be disappointed. One final note: Let's hope that the tracks from the unreleased "Silver Bell" emerge at some point in the near future. They are sure to be worthy additions to Patty's ouevre.
Free Music Review: Patty returns to her roots Hit: 5 Stars
So my story with Patty Griffin is I saw her at a Landmine Benefit concert in Chicago. I swore before the concert I knew all the performers, although I could not name a song by Patty. Then she sang her first song of the night. Afterwards, my beloved Steve Earle said "Yikes!" before he tried one of his own songs, realizing what a formidable act he had to follow. I realized I had never seen or heard of Patty before, and I had to have more. I bought Living with Ghosts, and fell in love with the album, in particular the song Sweet Lorraine. However, with 1000 Kisses, in my humble opinion, Patty surely bests Living with Ghosts. Thanks to Dave Matthews for rescueing Patty from record label limbo. I love this album. My favorite song is "Long Way Home", a song of total irony. Here is a sad song about a funeral and burying a love of 40 years, and my 6 year old daughter is dancing a jig to it. "Be Careful" is a total chick song - who hasn't felt so vulnerable when in love. The mournful tune "Rain" breaks my heart while Patty's voice soars. "Tomorrow Night" puts most broken-hearted lounge singers to shame. "Chief" boasts a Dave-Matthews style tempo change as it ruminates on the dreamer in us all. Patty, with the voice from heaven, has crafted one of her finest albums yet!
