Free Music Notes for 1000 KissesFree Music Review: Beautiful Hit: 5 Stars
After reading some of these reviews, it seems almost seems unecessary to add another, but like everyone else, I am moved to comment on this beatiful recording. There are few artists who stand the test of time and whose songs can be listened to over and over and over, Patty is one of those rare gems. She truly "sings my life with her words" and tugs at emotions I was unaware I even felt. I know this is from another record, but the line "my heart is big and sore" may describe a feeling better than any other phrase. She just does that on every song. The song "Long Ride Home" is one of those tunes that will be around in 100 years. I call her the female Johnny Cash. Been there, done that, summed it up for everyone else in a way that is as heart wrenching as it is beautiful. Thanks Patty.
Free Music Review: A Masterpiece of Melancholy... Hit: 5 Stars
Upon first listen, I was a little disappointed with this cd. Only eight certifiable songs...nine if you count the Spanish-language track from which the title of the cd comes. Once I got over the initial feeling of being cheated by the album's length, I began to really listen to the songs and how well they worked together. After several months of repeated listenings, I've concluded that 1000 KISSES is a small masterpiece. Much like Springsteen's NEBRASKA, most of the songs take the form of a rural narrative. Listened to as a whole (which I recommend), 1000 KISSES sustains a mood of the most beautiful melancholy you're likely to ever experience from a cd. Certain tracks stand out: 'Making Pies,' 'Rain,' 'Long Ride Home.' But, it's the album as a whole that succeeds as a modern classic.
Free Music Review: Beauty Incarnate Hit: 5 Stars
This is an album of exceptional beauty, delicacy, strength, and craft. Patty Griffin is an artist at the peak of her game and the world is a better place for having her. Her songwriting is on par with the best popular music has to offer. What a sweet sensibility she breathes, her whole body singing out these delightful tales. The first six tunes absolutely kill. By the time "Long Ride Home," comes on, it just might be time to sit your [tail] down and choke back a sob. The band swells sweetly, accents perfectly, and chugs when the time is right. It's got twang. There are no drums. It IS slight in duration, yet somehow a full meal. Call it folk if you must, but seriously, this is a timeless gem, a brilliant bit of emotional verity that will just get better with time.
Free Music Review: Truly beautiful artist and music Hit: 5 Stars
Patty Griffin is an artist I wasn't very aware of, until one day I heard this album playing in a local record store. I was immediately drawn to it, and I bought it. I was not disapointed at all. She has a beautiful, endearing voice that is hard to explain, other than it is beautiful. Lyrically this album is very deep and it moves me greatly. My two favorite tracks are the opening "Rain" and "Nobody's Crying", which are strong songs that have so much emotion and pain in her vocals. Her cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Stolen Car", in my opinion, even is better than the original. Other highlights include "Makin Pies", "Tomorrow Night" and "Long Way Home". Overall a true gem everyone should listen to.
Free Music Review: No one does it better Hit: 5 Stars
After first seeing Patty perform at a bookstore a couple of years ago and then again last month in Ann Arbor (2003 mini-tour) I am still in awe of her. This recording, much like her previous three, knocks the air out of you and leaves you a bit dazed. To say she is the best singer-songwriter currently recording music isn't too strong a statement. She truly does 'sing my life with her words' on 1,000 Kisses and she manages to see underneath the emotional covers where we all hide. "Long Ride Home" will be one of those songs that people still sing in 100 years. I hope Patty begins to get some of the attention she deserves, though I am not sure that it is necessary - she and the chosen few who follow her music are doing just fine right now.
