Free Music Notes for 1000 KissesFree Music Review: MONKEYTOT IS A MORON. Hit: 5 Stars
I LOVE Patty Griffin. She's amazing and everything she's done is amazing. I'm really just writing this to clear up Monkeytot's (prior reviewer)unbelievable and mistaken belief that Patty Griffin was on the sitcom "Suddenly Susan". I mean, come on, dude! The actress playing the secretary, Vicki, on that show is KATHY Griffin, NOT the singer, PATTY Griffin. I realize this distinction may be hard for some to make as it only takes 2 letters to mispell "Patty" as "Kathy". Anyway, I would hate for either woman or their fans to think that people mistake them for the same person. Monkeytot, you should check your info before you make it public. There's no point in wasting your time writing reviews if you're not credible.
Free Music Review: Her masterpiece Hit: 5 Stars
Patty Griffin has two distinct gifts as a songwriter: re-creating introspective states of mind, and drawing affecting character portraits. This album combines some of her best work in both modes. In the exquisite "Making Pies" she achieves both in the same song. When I saw she made #19 on Paste Magazine's list of greatest living songwriters (ahead of Van Morrison and Lucinda Williams, among many others) I thought it just revealed the bias of the poll, or the power of recentness. But I went back and listened to her work, and now I see it. There's some amazing stuff on her other CD's, but this one hits the sweet spot of her talent, and shows why other singer-songwriters are so openly in awe of her ability to make emptiness feel so full.
Free Music Review: Patti Griffin's finest so far Hit: 5 Stars
This CD with Long Ride Home and Making Pies stands out as Patti's finest, and one of the best CDs of the decade. While listening to this CD you will sit down in a big car and imagine what you could do to make your life better - thinking about it from the end to the present. You'll pick out words you wish you never said and reimagine yourself as a better person. You'll venture into the world of someone for whom coping with loss is the rebirth of hope everyday in a fresh baked pie. Patti tells stories that envelop us in the reality of someone else for a few minutes. Amidst the listen, we realize these songs aren't just about someone else. They are us too. 1000 Kisses is a personal and emotionally rich experience in contemporary folk.
Free Music Review: Great! Hit: 5 Stars
This is one of the better CD's I have acquired in a long long time. Patty Griffin's music is a true treasure, for its depth, it's honesty and it's pure heart. I'm glad I discovered this very bright 40 year-old singer. On this CD she shows an amazing versatility, from Springsteen's "Stolen Car" to "Rain" and "Chief". They are deep songs from the heart, about real humanity and real challenges. It's not the commercialized glitter pop we all hear on the radio.
I strongly recommend Griffin's music. If you like her, you may also want to check out John Gorka, Nanci Griffith, Patty Larkin or Mindy Smith. Also check out Griffin's "Impossible Dream" Does she play concerts? I would love to see her live.
Free Music Review: AMAZING! Hit: 5 Stars
One of my favourite concert moments was Patty perfoming her song "LET HIM FLY" with the Dixie Chicks on their last tour. That memomy fuelled my anticipation for this release....Worth every moment of the wait. I am awestruck. This is one of the most uniformly strong CDs I have heard in a long while Standouts are "Rain" and "Be Careful". She kills me everytime I listen to "Nobody's Crying" which is about 5 times a day, so far. My only small quibble is with the song "Chief". This is an interesting song but it doesn't blend well with the "mood" of the rest of the CD. It sounds more like a leftover track from "Flaming Red". That aside, I am left searching for superlatives in describing this CD.
