Free Music Review: Long live the likes of Patty Griffin....
Hit: 5 Stars

I've been listening to this collection of new Patty Griffin tunes and
its so impressive. Her voice sails over the mix, she hasn't sounded this
self assured and confident this could well be her best mature collection, just listen to her duet with Emmylou Harris on track three, "Trapeze", the
soaring soulful vocals on "Up to the Mountain(MLK song)" and "Heavenly day", this lady can sing. If
you only listen to pop music these days the styles of these compostions
may take some time to get to know, I like to call this style
Americana music, a mix of styles from all over this country, its
got some country edge, rock and folk, soulfully sung, some adult comtemporary thrown in, its a style
of music that seems to be loosing steam, maybe because popular music tries to manufacture everything these days, you can't find talent like this in
cattle calls, shes her own little diamond, rare & fragiile for sure in these times.
Its hard to find a happy medium anymore, either you like something or you
don't, to each his/her own. People have such little patients, want
everything fast, now, sorry I need to take this call, this takes some
attention span to appreciate, as I said, not for everyones tastes. I just know this music touches me and is
exhilarating and well worth taking the time to get to know. Many tunes
inspire with their soulful ache, some are just plain beautifully sung
some have some great stories to tell, this is a complete collection for
Patty Griffin fans and should be in everyones disc player. Patty, don't
ever give up, you should be very proud of this one.

Free Music Review: Chill-invoking!
Hit: 5 Stars

On first listen I found this set of songs to be very soothing and highly enjoyable, but not moving or remarkable. Afterall, nothing can measure up to the jolt you feel the first time you hear Patty Griffin, and some of her earlier works are just so gut-wrenchingly raw and startlingly honest and sad. Oh, but then....then, I listened to it again, and again, and again. And with each turn, this album has swiftly and steadily pushed itself deeper into my soul and psyche until today, as I was listening, I found myself with chills, with tears, alternately crying and smiling. And I found myself in complete awe of how utterly moving and remarkable this piece of work is. I think that the very thing that put me and maybe others off at first is what, now, I find most relatable. And that is that Patty is aging and maturing, mellowing and coming to terms with life and its offerings. And her music is, of course, reflecting this. Some highlights for me include:
1)The warm and nostalgic feeling of "Bergundy Shoes" and the one word chorus "Sun". How she can make a single word mean so many things and evoke such emotion is amazing to me. 2)The beat and rhythm of both "No Bad News" and "Getting Ready" are infectious and I am incapable of not moving when I hear it 3) The "sun on my skin and smell of fresh-cut grass and warm earth" feeling I get when I hear "Heavenly Day". Knowing it is about her dogs makes it that much more endearing to me, but it is a great, feel-good song regardless of her muse. There is such a variety of style from song to song that I am sure nearly anyone can find a song to love. I, for one, love them all.

Free Music Review: When the History of Her Career Is Written...
Hit: 5 Stars

Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks," Young's "After the Goldrush," Browne's "Late for the Sky," U2's "Joshua Tree," McLachlan's "Surfacing"...and while some reading this might legitimately plug in different titles for these artists, my point is that every great artist has one (or perhaps two) works that immortalize their careers. Thankfully, Patty Griffin has a long way to go, but it's hard to imagine anything she'll do from here on overachieving this magnificent release. The purity and passion of her singing, the power and profundity of her lyrics, which can almost literally turn one's heart inside-out, the confidence, versatility and genius she demonstrates in moving from gospel to gorgeous strings to hard edged folk to Hispanic-tinged brass arrangements left me, an already dedicated fan, feeling that Patty Griffin has, with "Children Running Through," guaranteed herself a permanent place in the pantheon of the very greatest singer-songwriters of all time. Again, Griffin is still in the middle of what has already been an amazing career, so if this sounds like an obituary, I don't mean it to. It's just hard to imagine anything she (or anyone else, for that matter) will do from here on being better than this. That said, I guess it won't really surprise me if she finds yet another, higher mountain to climb. Bottom line: If you consider yourself an audiophile or a collector of the best music ever recorded, your collection won't be complete until "Children Running Through" is added to it. This is a great and timeless record.

Free Music Review: Not her best, but still great
Hit: 5 Stars

Since I discovered her music a year ago, Patty Griffin has become my favorite musical artist, and I've purchased all of her CD's. I don't think every song on this album is as good as those found on "Living With Ghosts" or "Impossible Dream", but it's still worth the 5-star rating. There are a few songs that don't appear to have a whole lot to say, which disappointed me a bit when I first heard it, but I guess not every song needs to be a gut-wrenching, soul-stirring, heart-pounding experience that leaves you breathless, saying "WOW!". There's one song that I don't even particularly care for (Stay on the Ride). The Amazon review makes a good point about this album being a collection of stories about all sorts of characters; there are many moods and states of mind to be found here. The song that really stands out for me is "No Bad News"; classic Patty... plenty of passion and some great lines. At the same time the song really makes you want to turn the volume way up, stomp your feet and sing along. I just came back from seeing her in concert at the Warfield and her performance of that song had even more energy live than it does on the CD; that one had the whole house rocking and a few jaws dropping at how amazing her and her band were. This disc is a great showcase for her voice, and she shows off the entire range of what she's capable of. There are still plenty of gems in this one to justify adding it to your collection, even if you have all of her other work.

Free Music Review: Only a handful of albums in my lifetime have moved me like this one!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Do you remember those few albums in your life that you could NOT STOP PLAYING? This was it for me and it has been years since I've had an album like this that so completely moved me to tears, happiness, smiles....wow! I happened to be listening to our local public radio station and heard "Stay on the ride" I was so amazed at her voice that I pulled over and called the station to see who it was. By the end of the next day I had my copy of "Children running through" and was in awe!! As a musician and one time music promoter I have a deep appreciation for music in general but Patty Griffin takes you on a brilliant story telling musical roller coaster ride that will have you singing and huming these haunting, simple yet magical songs. "Someone elses tomorrow", "Burgundy shoes", "Crying over" and "Up to the mountain" are my personal favorites, with only one song on the entire album that I didn't care for that much. I am a tough critic of music but give this album my highest approval!! She will be in Portland,Ore. in march and I hope to make the 8 hour drive with my daughter to hear her stories, songs, and heartfelt magical voice!! ( If you want to give your young children a good start in music appreciation play this around the house often. If you don't have kids just light a few candles....pour a glass of your favorite wine and let it play a few times over. You'll see what I mean )
