Free Music Review: If you've enjoyed other Patty Griffin songs and not bought a CD this is the one to get
Hit: 5 Stars

To date, I don't believe there's been a Patty Griffin CD worth any less than 4 stars, but "Children Running Through" is overall the best of her work--to date. Is it the penultimate as some would say, I hope not. I suspect she's got a lot more to say and hopefully, many more years to convey the message to us.

One thing about "Children," it is the most diverse of all of her work to date. The opener, "You'll Remember" has a jazz beat and could easily have been covered by Holly Cole. "Trapeze" is a story-song in the tradition of old folkies like Harry Chapin and Woody Guthrie--add to it the duet performance with Emmylou Harris and it's tops on my list of duets.

In my opinion, the only 'miss' on this CD is "Up On a Mountain." Patty doesn't have the sound or the range to carry this song off--but I'd love to hear someone like Shelby Lynne cover it.

Free Music Review: Children Running Through - Griffin's Refreshing Varity Pack
Hit: 5 Stars

Children Running Through is a variety pack of pleasant surprises. Rather than follow a formula of like-sounding songs throughout the album, Griffin mixes this up with upbeat blues, folk ballads, gospel, contemporary country, and pop. A multi-faceted artist with incredible versatility, Patty Griffin falls somewhere between Allison Krauss, The Dixie Chicks, and Emmy Lou Harris. This may be frustrating to some listeners who are intent on staying within one genre. In "Getting Ready", Patty Griffin really has some fun and sounds a lot like Sheryl Crow. One of the best tracks on the CD is "Up To The Mountain", also called the MLK song. Griffin's vocal performance in this song is moving and impressive. In contrast, her folksy duet in "Trapeze" almost sounds like a Union Station song. This is a great CD to add to your collection, it's Patty Griffin at her best.

Free Music Review: Her Finest Hour
Hit: 5 Stars

I've always been a sorta-kinda fan of Patty Griffin, but each of her prior albums has suffered from a few (or more) dud songs, and moments where her voice struggles against notes that she just can't hit very well. Finally an album where these problems are nearly absent! It's amazing how gracefully she's aging; her voice has never sounded so good. A couple tracks took some time to grow on me, but now I can honestly say it's a pleasure for me to listen to this album from beginning to end without skipping a single track. And as for the standout tracks...I would name them, but there are about seven of them. (Though "No Bad News" and "Up to the Mountain" are among the best songs she's ever recorded.) I can't wait to hear her next album, but if Children Running Through ends up being her masterpiece, that's good enough for me.

Free Music Review: Soulful Griffin Delivers Knockout Disc
Hit: 5 Stars

Patty Griffin's voice gets in the listener's soul and refuses to leave. Her previous disc "Impossible Dream" was sheer perfection. With the exception of one track, "Children" rises to even new heights. Although Griffin is strongest on the ballads, she delivers several really great up-tempo numbers. Of particular note is "No Bad News". But, the slow songs are where the listener sits up and takes notice. She is riveting on her ode to Martin Luther King, "Up To The Mountain". The follow up track is just as good: "I Don't Ever Give Up". The only clunker on this otherwise splendid and majestic set is the loud "Getting Ready". The song simply throws the whole set off balance. Yes, Patty can rock with the best, but with a voice and soul like hers, why bother? Still a 5-star outing because every other number is heaven.

Free Music Review: Just in time for the summer driving season
Hit: 5 Stars

I do a lot of driving for my job. Let me paint a picture for you. It is 80+ degrees, it is Ohio so it is muggy, and I am in my zoomy little Toyota Corolla (Silver), on a state route in the middle of no where because I am too fussy for the highway these days, eyes open for antique stores and junk shops, window cranked down (that's right, no power windows) and this CD is cranked up. This CD with it's down and dirty blues inspired songs, playful and sassy alt-country songs, and soulful simple folk songs.
And of course there is rocking out.
Even if you hate music, even if you are curmudgeonly and grumpy, buy this CD anyway, just for the song Heavenly Day. It will melt your fool heart. Patty Griffin said in concert that she wrote this track for her dog and that's just fine by me.
