Free Music Notes for Flaming RedFree Music Review: A Great Mix Hit: 5 Stars
If you could take the wit of the Indigo Girls, the emotion of Sarah McLachlan, the songwriting ability of Tori Amos, and the raw-ness of Sheryl Crow, and mix it all together, you'd come up with Patty Griffin. She opens with the title track, a rocking little ditty that changes the fairy tale of "The Red Shoes" into a power trip without apologies. "One Big Love" is just a happy-go-lucky tune about love. "Tony," probably the most touching and controversial song on the album, is the story of a gay boy that Griffin went to high school with, was abused and tormented by his classmates, and ultimately killed himself. Griffin swiftly changes from a country ballad ("Goodbye"), to flat-out sexually charged rock & roll ("Wiggley Fingers"), to quiet, thought provoking songs about motherhood and growing up ("Mary" w/Emmylou Harris and "Peter Pan"). Patty Griffin's "Flaming Red" is an album by an artist not afraid to wander, and sometimes get lost in, new territory. And luckily, she takes the listener with her.
Free Music Review: Will be one of "my" classics Hit: 5 Stars
I am writing this review in the hopes that patty griffin may read it and know from my heart what this cd means to me. I bought this cd after attending a concert withPatty andRusted Root. I was really going to see Rusted Roott but found that Patty stole my heart. I love what you do with your voice and your poetry is so clever and moving. I then bought Living with Ghosts and I do feel connected to songs here as well. I believe this is a work of art as well but it seems for me atleast the first album i hear of an artist is the one that sticks with me. The song Goodbye still makes me cry when I hear it even though I have been listening to it for two years. I lost my mother 2 years ago in april and this song truly moves me. I have to admit there are two songs on the cd that for me are not easy to listen to. I love the song Mary and how you describe her. I am kinda artistic too( I don't write) but I feel connected to you and your insights. Hope I get to meet ya i nAnnapolis if you come. Don't want to sound any more gushy than I already do. Take care and thanks
Free Music Review: Magical song writing and powerfull music! Hit: 5 Stars
If you expect another Living with Ghost album, think again. I have been a Patty Griffin fan from day one and never grow tired of her first album, but when I put the new CD in for the first time, I thought "where is this coming from or going to?" I really wasn't sure if I liked it or not. After a short listen to every song I stopped the CD and thought to myself...is this even Patty and is this even good. Well, as I thought about it, I thought "maybe I need to read the lyrics and open my mind to an artist grewing musically...I thought maybe this is good and I need to re-think." With all this said I can tell you this is truly an album worth buying, it not only has some of the most incredible song writting of today but music that accents a style that only Patty Griffin can bleed. The highlites would have to be Change, Tony, Wiggle Fingers and Mary. I thought I would never find a release that I could listen to over and over like "Living with Ghost", but I have! Thank you Patty!
Free Music Review: I love this album Hit: 5 Stars
I love this album! Patty is the real thing! The title song, "Flaming Red", is a raucus, put a jump start in your Friday night kind of song. "Blue Sky" is another song with a great electric gutiar buzz. But most of the album is slower, plaintive, dreamy, or even angry. Patty's got that fiesty lookout-world-I'm-here kind of attitude."Carry Me" is a catchy song with a heartbeat like drum. And "Tony" is a favorite of mine because it reminds me of someone I knew. Patty draws him so clearly. I wore grooves in this CD when my mother died. I love "Goodbye" and "Mary". Fortunately there are a variety of moods and styles in this album. You can imagine Patty sitting on a piano in some smokey bar singing "Go Now". And catch the spareness of voice and piano on "Peter Pan". It's a goodbye song. A sort of confessional song, but a hopeful song. You feel like you've reached the last chapter of some great novel.
Free Music Review: Perfection Hit: 5 Stars
I think Patty may be most talented singer-songwriter making music today, certainly within the female folk-rock category which I love so much. Her lyrics, melodies, voice, guitar, and arrangements are all impeccable. I won't compare "Flaming Red" to her other albums because each is different, but each is brilliant. Flaming Red is (mostly) electric, rocking Patty, and it might be the best adult rock album of the 90s. In fact, I'll go out on that limb and state that it is! Patty takes you on a musical and emotional roller coaster on this album -- fast and loud, slow and quiet, happy, wild, achingly sad. Play it at high volume and give it your complete attention. Again and again. With each listen you'll discover a subtle musical gem you didn't notice before. Do yourself a favor and get this CD today. Then get everything else that Patty has ever done and does in the future.
