Free Music Review: Awesome album by an awesome singer/songwriter
Hit: 5 Stars

What an amazing album by probably the best singer/songwriter to emerge in the past 20+ years. I read a couple reviews that compared this album unfavorably to the great Living With Ghosts CD. I will admit that like all of Patty's albums, on the very first spin it didn't quite sink in. BUT, after you spin this 3 or more times, you will most likely agree that this ranks right up with all of her albums. I think Patty's music is just too complex for most of us to "get it" on the first listen. But if you spin this and her other albums a few times, you will likely become a Patty fanatic. The only song that doesn't grab me is the first one (the title track) but after that, it's pure Patty magic. I only hope she keeps making records cuz I'm about to wear out all of her CDs.

Free Music Review: Patty rules!
Hit: 5 Stars

I, like many others, was introduced to Patty when I was blown away by "Let Him Fly" and "Every Little Bit" off her debut album "Living with Ghosts." Factoid: that whole album was sent to A&M as a demo tape. She intended to record the album with a full band but they loved the demo so much they wouldn't let her do it! So "Flaming Red" is a more fully intentional effort, and she pulls it off beautifully. Although her roots are the Boston folk scene, Patty holds her own as a rocker. I can't wait for her next effort. Take heed: the only song I consistently skip on both albums is the first one. Take your time with the cuts; each one is a small, beautifully realized universe of its own. Keep an eye on this woman.

Free Music Review: Why is this a secret?
Hit: 5 Stars

I love this cd. I just got it a couple of weeks ago, but it's already a favorite. I learned about Patty after hearing another artist laud her great song-writing ability, and decided to check her out. I now have 3 of her albums. They are all vastly different from one another, and they are all just as good. This album is the rock album, and is a lot of fun to listen to. I like to listen to it in the car. 'One Big Love' is probably my favorite track on the album, because it's just a great summer song and I spend a lot of time in my car. All the songs are either good or great. I can't believe this album wasn't a huge hit when it came out - but I'm glad Patty is still making albums even though it wasn't - although it should have been!

Free Music Review: Great album from a very talented artist
Hit: 5 Stars

I recently downloaded a fan-made music video which used Patty Griffin's song "Mary". That particular song so beautiful, it almost made me cry. I decided to do a little research on Patty Griffin here at Amazon and find out which album that song was on. The reviews on all of her albums were really great, so I purchased 3 of her albums. Three! I never do that. So far, I'm not disappointed. It seems like it's getting harder to find artists who have a talent for writing meaningful lyrics AND composing great melodies. Flaming Red is an awesome album. Flaming Red, Blue Skies, Goodbye, Cristina, and of course Mary are my favorites, but I don't think there's a "weak" song on the entire album. Can't wait to listen to the next one!

Free Music Review: Wish She'd Try Something Like This Again
Hit: 5 Stars

I've been listening to Patty Griffin since Living With Ghosts was first released - I loved it. So I had to get her next release, Flaming Red. Wow, what a follow-up. NOTHING like the first effort, but just as good, if not better. Here it is over ten years later, and I still listen to these first two albums, though I find most of her later stuff pretty disposable - too bad. Living With Ghosts was almost a country/folk demo tape; basically just her and a guitar. Flaming Red shows that her voice is strong enough to handle pure rock 'n roll with the best of them. I kept hoping she would try this muscular approach again; it was just SO good. Unfortunately, this appears to be a singular anomoly. Don't pass it up.
