Free Music Notes for Flaming RedFree Music Review: An amazingly lush and emotive album Hit: 5 Stars
Patty Griffin once again proves herself to be one of the most talented songwriters today on her second effort, Flaming Red. Griffin departs from the simple acoustic sound of her previous album, Living with Ghosts, and chooses a more ephemeral sound, bringing up thoughts of Sarah McLachlan's album Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. On tracks such as "Tony", "Mary", and "Christina" she combines her amazing talents as a lyricist with arrangements that absolutely blew my mind. While it does rock a little bit harder than her previous efforts, Flaming Red loses none of Griffin's emotional style. This is one of those CDs that makes you remember why you started enjoying music in the first place.
Free Music Review: Well written batch of tunes Hit: 5 Stars
This cd never loses its gloss. I've had it for many years and it is one I can always go back to. The only track I don't really enjoy is the the title track. It is decent, but when you hear the rest of the songs, it is below the level of the rest.
Her voice isn't as pure or polished as some of the other stars, but it is pretty close. However, she has a distinctive voice that really bring out the melodies of the fast and slow tunes.
This is my favorite cd of hers...and it is hard to outdo. If you are a fan of any type of country, folk, alternative, or simple rock, you won't be disappointed. The vibe does it all and doesn't stray to far to the left of right. Almost perfect.
Free Music Review: This has to be the record to break out Patty Griffin.... Hit: 5 Stars
Flaming Red is a great record. Songs like "One Big Love", "Change", "Wiggley Fingers", and especially beautiful "Mary" showcase a very different Patty Griffin than what was heard pryor to this studio outing. She sure takes some new directions but she is a natural firecracker and I love the way she takes risks for her art sake. No painting or book should be made twice, Patty isn't "ripping" any other singer off, I'm sure she will be doing the acoustic thing very soon, but hey this has some awesome songs that should have made Patty a star but it did get her attention of the BIG GUYS I'm sure. What ever she decides to do its always first class, love this singer!
Free Music Review: hey mr. big time producer Hit: 5 Stars
a little over-produced, but this is still an outstanding second set. i purchased this album hoping for something similar to "living with ghosts," and was a bit taken aback at first. you won't get the acoustic only tracks on this one that completely comprised the first album. the opening track should have been discarded, leaving you with a grat album that really flows. griffin really shows some range on this album, hitting all kinds of crazy notes. and the lyrical content is just as outstanding as her previous effort. unfortuantely, her cover art still stinks. overall, this is an outstanding album; i highly recommend to anyone looking for a solid female vocalist....
Free Music Review: One of the best folk crossover albums ever Hit: 5 Stars
I heard Patty Grifin for the first time in some Newbury Comics store and fell in love immediately with her voice and her songs. I bought Flaming Red first and was pleasantly surprised to find that the whole album was excellent. "Mary" is perhaps one of the best songs I've heard. "Goodbye" and "Peter Pan" are in the same vein and are beautiful as well. I bought Living With Ghosts soon after and liked it, but the quiet nature of that album made me appreciate the "rockin'" songs on Flaming Red like "Tony" and "Blue Sky." Great album from a folkie who successfully crossed over to rock and roll without losing a step.
