Free Music Notes for Impossible DreamFree Music Review: A DREAM, YES, BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE Hit: 5 Stars
For all you Patty Griffin fans out there (MYSELF INCLUDED - BIG TIME). The latest release from this wonderful lady is just like a dream come true but it is not impossible to accept seeing it is from the best singer-song writer around today. period. You fans who adored "THOUSAND KISSES" will be simply delighted by this new group of songs. She takes up right where she left off, Writing and singing this fabulous collection of new tunes, and some older ones as well that have finally made it to release; like "Mother of God" and "Top of the World." But my personal favorite -"USELESS DESIRES" is worth the price of admission alone and is true to the style that is Patty's alone. Also worthy of note are "Kite Song" and "Rowing Song" which are typical Patty Griffin songs that stay with you and find a place unalterable in your soul, where they belong. You wont be disappointed. "Impossible Dream"?, it is only Impossible to imagine how Patty has avoided "super-stardom" with the talent she has but Im glad and thankful because it gives us the illusion that she is ours alone and that we dont have to loose her ever. "Stay close to your heart, Patty - thats where the music is that we love. Thank you , again, for a wonderful album." (Album? boy am I dating myself). Arnold Visconti. Naldotho@aol.com
Free Music Review: just Patty Hit: 5 Stars
ok...I love this CD. When I first got it, I was a little disappointed..but only in comparison to her other CDs. Then I realized it was not the CD, but ME. The CD gets "deeper" with every listen. Like her previous release "Making Pies"...you can listen to it and think...shallow and makes no sense..but it is really deep, and the "shallowness" is just your own lack of thinking. That is how this CD is. Can seem too mellow .... but that is the mood. And, when you think of ALL the possibilities Patty had (given the gifted songwriter she is)....this IS the mood, and the tone, and the whole package she was going for. And THAT alone says a lot. She was quoted as saying that there was not ear-candy here...... Well, maybe if you are looking for party songs, or happy go lucky songs...that is true. But, if you are wanting to think, and feel, and feel a deeper happiness (even if it is from thinking and feeling)...then it IS ear-candy. Maybe not the BEST Patty CD. But definitely an integral part of the journey. If you don't have a Patty CD in your collection....maybe not the best one to start with...but, once you start with another one...you WILL end up here. Start or finish....awesome Patty music.
Free Music Review: Ripped Open The World And Laid It Bare Hit: 5 Stars
I became a fan with 1,000 Kisses, like many. I was hooked since I heard Rain. Since I've discovered that Patty has many different flavors, and all of them are good. I awaited this album with a great deal of excitement, and unlike some other new albums by favorite artists of mine (Vienna Teng, Sophie B. Hawkins, Sarah Mclachlan) the actual product far exceeded my expectations. While I loved many songs on 1,000 Kisses, the record seemed a bit disjointed as a whole. Impossible Dream seems a more complete work. It is sadder and more melancholy, but there is such a ring of truth to it all that it never seems as though Patty has become a miserablist. There is still hope there, there is still light - and such unimaginable beauty. I loved Top of The World from the Dixie Chicks, not realizing it was Patty's song. Her version blows that one away. Useless Desires is another standout track, though there is not a bad one in the bunch. Her lyrics are mesmerizing. Clever and insightful while being organic and never overly sentimental. It feels as though she's ripped open the world and laid it bare. It's not all happy, but it's true. And there is such beauty in that. Please sample this album. I don't think you'll be dissapointed.
Free Music Review: beautiful, subtle, understated and somewhat muted Hit: 5 Stars
Having just become a fan of Miss Griffin from all three of her past albums, I must admit I went into this album with extremely high expectations of being blown over. That didn't happen. Instant love, and immediate connection with Ms. Griffin were absent. And I thought to myself, "Why is this? I know there's something here."Then one day while fighting boredom and trudging along the Los Angeles expressway web, I popped the CD in and began reading the lyrics along with her voice as I slowed to a crawl. And then it clicked. Every song. beautiful. deep. subtle. I can't exactly say that I broke down weeping, but I was deeply moved by her lyrics. The Kite Song was one of my favorites, as well as When it Don't Come Easy. But I began to read amazing lyrics in the Rowing Song, which reminded me of when I moved to LA all alone. "the further I go, more letters from home never arrive". And for the first time I understood "Top of the World" and why it was so very sad. It's a gorgeous album so thick with Patty's emotions. Take the time to sit down with her album liner notes and lyrics and read this album like a book. Because you will not be sorry.
Free Music Review: The Emily Dickinson of Music Hit: 5 Stars
Patty Griffin is the Emily Dickinson of music. Her songs are poems.
Her lyrics remind me of the Twain remark, that "the difference between the almost right word and the right word is the difference between the lightening bug and the lightening."
Emmylou Harris has said that "mediocrity is gonna destroy the world long before Armageddon ever does."
That's why Emmy has tried so to make certain Patty's voice is heard.
Emmy knows quality.
The negative reviews on this page reflect the state of our nation. We are the country that tore down Emily Dickinson's home and put in a Chevron. We don't recognize our own gold. We are awash in contentless speech and hat acts.
If you love Randi Rhodes, Harper Lee, the Gettysburg Address and the harmonies of the great Emmyloy Harris, buy yourself some Patty Griffin. If you are devoid of empathy and imagination, if Patty's song Standing, in which (as one Amazon reviewer writes) she "repeats the word standing five times" baffles you, buy yourself something by the newest hat act.
Vive le difference!!!
