Free Music Review: Another great album from Patty Griffin
Hit: 5 Stars

I must give Ms. Griffin kudos - she sure know how to put together a great album. IMPOSSIBLE DREAM is at times melacholy, and at times uplifting, but at all times a masterpiece.

Tracks that really stood out for me are: "As cold as it gets", which is a bluesy return tot he accoustic style that Ms. Griffin displayed on her first album, LIVING WITH GHOSTS. The third track "kite song", I believe, is an ethereal hymn to joy; I haven't checked, but from the sound of it, I could swear that Sigor Ros had worked with her on this track. "Top of the World" is a song about an old man dying with regrets - I haven't heard the Dixie Chicks version of this song, but I'm sure that they can't come close to the emotional heights that Patty reaches with her music. "Florida" is another great track about lost youth; and "Mother of God" is classic Patty Griffin - she knows how to capture tragedy and redemption like no other song writer out there.

I would recommend this album highly to anyone, and fans of her past work will surely enjoy it.

Free Music Review: If you only see one concert this summer, see Patty Griffin!
Hit: 5 Stars

I will ask the question of a previous reviewer... How can someone be this good? Her voice and songwriting just blows away any of her contemporaries out there. While I think that Living With Ghosts or even her live A Kiss in Time were probably stronger overall than Impossible Dream, it is still well worth picking up. Useless Desires and It Don't Come Easy are just fabulous songs - ones that you will play over and over and over again. Patty's voice is incredibly powerful throughout this CD, and her parent's rendition of Impossible Dream is just priceless. It is so great to see someone who has worked so hard for so many years finally being appreciated for her gifts. She has come a long way from her days of performing in little bars in and around Somerville, MA. She was amazing back then and has only gotten stronger in time. If you have never seen her perform live, see her on tour this summer. She is perhaps even better live than she is on her recordings. Hard to believe I know, but she is just incredible on stage.

Free Music Review: A perfect follow-up CD
Hit: 5 Stars

When you grow to love an artist, you're always a little apprehensive when new material comes out. You hope it will be the same, only better. Well, all my hopes and none of my fears are realized in Impossible Dream. It's just as good as - maybe better than - anything she's done, and to top it off, she's successfully added something to her sound and her style. There is no bad song here. "Love Throw a Line" is terrific - soulful, stirring, beautiful. So is "Useless Desires," my personal favorite so far. I'm not crazy about the horns in "When It Don't Come Easy," but the song is one of the best despite the horns. If you get a chance to hear Patty in concert, do it. She is a geniune talent, both vocally and as a song-writer. One of the reasons she hasn't been discovered by a wider audience, I think, is because she defies classification into a particular genre. When someone asks me what kind of music she plays, I just say "great." And it gets better every time you listen.

Free Music Review: Probably the closest to an impulse buy I'll ever get
Hit: 5 Stars

So I was at the CD store (buying the new Straylight Run CD, btw, which is excellent), and I had some extra money, so I was trying to remember names from my extensive Amazon browsing of the night before, and all I came up with was the "Impossible Dream" title (the cover made quite an impression on me, I loved and still love the art) so I questioned the employees, who were thankfully NOT walmart employees and could, after a minute, tell me who I was looking for; Patty Griffin. And I bought the CD. I'm listening to it for the first time now, and it stirs something deep in me, although I don't know what. It could be nervousness at whether the CD is likeable. Because, you know, I /really/ want to like this CD. I want to be able to tell myself that impulse buys aren't all bad and my instincts are trustable. Nothing I can think of annoys me about what I'm hearing, so I guess it's good. Absence of bad. Okay yeah I'm falling in love with CD.
