Free Music Notes for Impossible DreamFree Music Review: Patty at her best Hit: 5 Stars
The release of Patty Griffin's "Impossible Dream" in her 40th year may be a coincidence, however, her latest studio release shows all of the hallmarks of a highly talented, professional and polished singer-songwriter in her absolute prime. As always, Griffin proves herself to be a master of many styles and moods, gliding effortlessly through soul, blues, folk and country, without ever leaving any impression of dis-jointedness or confusion. Her vocals as always, reinforce her songs and she finally records many songs that were previously only accessible through bootlegs and amateur recordings. Buy it, play it and enjoy it - sure to be my favourite album of 2004.
Free Music Review: The Voice of an Angel Hit: 5 Stars
Having only recently discovered Patty's music I feel like I have missed out on the greatest female singer/songwriter of the past 20 years. I recently purchased all of here albums and this has proven to be one of the best musical purchases I have made in a long time. Some of these songs on this particular album actually give me goosebumps. Standout tracks include: 'When It Don't Come Easy', 'Kite Song', 'Top of the World', 'Standing'. However, there isn't a bad song on this wonderfully complete album. The voice of an angel. It may have taken me far too long to discover Patty's music. But I will try and make up for lost time.
Free Music Review: Patty is just amazing. Hit: 5 Stars
There are some Patty fans out there who simply can't accept it when she records anything that doesn't consist solely of stark acoustic performances with one guitar and her voice. But they are simply dead wrong, and this CD proves it. The gospel-inspired background vocals, the mournful horns on the Rowing Song, the robust full-band work on Love Throws A Line - it's all just amazing. Fine - so far I can't identify a song on this album that is up there with "Mary" or "Making Pies" - but there also isn't any "Peter Pan" on this CD, either. Start to finish it's an amazing package.
Free Music Review: She's brilliant Hit: 5 Stars
Geez...Did Michael E Chase listen to the same ID as me? I would think even a music listening novice would recognize the effectiveness of repeating a word or phrase in a song, especially when that word embodies the spirit and meaning of the song. It's not always clever and cryptic lyrics that make a song great. Cripes... How many times did Mick Jagger say "I can't get no satisfaction" anyway? Still, Patty writes amazing lyrics (Useless Desires, Florida), Michael E Chase's opinion notwithstanding. So if you're thinking of purchasing this album, don't let one man's opinion change your mind.
Free Music Review: Lovely and Timeless Hit: 5 Stars
I was impressed with Patty Griffin's range on "Flaming Red" but it's the beautiful lyrics and softer melodies of "Impossible Dream" that have made me a huge fan of her music. The album was like a lovely and unexpected gem. Songs like "Kite", "Useless Desires", "Mother of God" and "Top of the World" (which surpasses the Dixie Chicks' version, IMO) are simply lovely. There's no frills to this music; it's timeless: just acoustic guitar, piano, fiddle, and I think I heard some cello in there, too. There are quite a few friends and relatives who will be getting this album for Christmas.
