Free Music Notes for Living With GhostsFree Music Review: First review that I have written... Hit: 5 Stars
I just feel compelled to write this. What an incredible CD! I came back to buy two more copies to give to friends. I heard "Not Alone" on LA Radio 103.1 (Sunrise Sunday) and I had to have it. My favorites: "Time Will Do the Talking" for anyone who has tried to connect with someone who wasn't ready for a relationship, this is the perfect "letting go" song...lyrics "I don't believe there is such a thing as saying too much, there are those who like to look and those who aint afraid to touch". The song "Forgiveness" I put on repeat and listened to for days. Incredible! Other favorites: "Mad Mission", "Every Little Bit", "Not Alone", "Let Him Fly"...funny, I am listing them all. They are all masterpieces. Patty Griffin, if you read these reviews, thank you for these songs. Others, buy this CD and go through every emotion in the book. You won't be disapointed. Enjoy!
Free Music Review: I can't stop listening to this CD. Hit: 5 Stars
From the very beginning of the opening track, "Moses," Patty Griffin grabs hold of you, and an amazing 42-minute musical journey gets underway. Throughout this album, she sings beautifully, she plays her guitar passionately, and she tells stories that are truly beautiful--sometimes sad, sometimes humorous, always beautiful. And her lyrics are brilliant: "I've seen the look before. Yes, it's kind of non-committal. It says, 'Come hither baby,' but then he's hard wood to whittle." (Has anyone else in the history of rock and roll thought to rhyme "non-committal" and "whittle"?) I don't know much about Patty Griffin. I don't have any of her other albums. I've never seen her in concert. In fact, I'd never heard of her until I saw her name in the Acknowledgments section of a great book called "Searching for God Knows What." I wasn't searching for Patty Griffin at the time. But I'm incredibly glad to have discovered her.
Free Music Review: a rare treasure Hit: 5 Stars
I first heard a song from this album on a cassette tape that someone gave me from the Lillith Fair. "Let Him Fly" absolutely blew my mind and became one of my favorite songs in my early 20s. Then "Forgiveness" became my next favorite. Now in my 30s, they are still my favorite songs and this album, hands down, is my favorite album of all time.
I've purchased every album by Patti Griffin since--and they each offer something incredibly new and creative--but this album is simply the most amazing thing I've ever heard. It can put you in a good mood, make you reflect, and honestly bring you to tears if that is what you may need at the moment. Her guitar playing is earthy and raw and her voice is completely emotional and sincere. If you are a folk music lover and you don't own this CD, you must purchase it immediately. It won't let you down and it will keep you happy for many years to come.
Free Music Review: Spare and Special Hit: 5 Stars
The mental image I instantly get when I put on this CD is of the artist, sitting alone on a darkened stage with her guitar, a single spotlight focused on her while she plays. That's the kind of intimate performance that fills this this album. Patty Griffin is an enormously talented woman who is undeservedly almost unknown - I'd describe her sound as a cross between Bonnie Raitt and Emmy Lou Harris. Some of the best tracks are "Let Him Fly" (covered recently by the Dixie Chicks, I think), "Every Little Bit" (a heartbreaking song about a damaged love affair), and "Mad Mission" (kind of an odd little song, but with undeniable charm). The closing track, "Not Alone," is as sad and beautiful as anything I've ever heard. If you love live performances - well, here's a studio recording that has the feeling of one. It's as if she's playing only for you.
Free Music Review: Got to the party late, but I'm never leaving. . . Hit: 5 Stars
I'd never heard of Patty Griffin until about a year ago when I was crossing the Bay Bridge late one Northern California night and "Every Little Bit" came on the radio. This memory always reminds me of the first time I heard Jeff Buckley. There are some artists who defy description and become a part your consciousness and Patty Griffin is one of them.
I went on to buy all of her CD's but this one is my favorite. There are no distractions, just a guitar and that voice. Nothing else is needed.
With a huge CD collection, I am often told that there is NO WAY I could possibly listen to all of the music I have collected over the years and I will admit there are a few I listened to once or twice and never went back to again - Living With Ghosts would not be one of those CD's. It is a masterpiece, a wonderful surprise. No one who truly loves music should be without it.
