Free Music Review: Trust me on this one
Hit: 5 Stars

I am really into female artists with unique voices: Harriet Wheeler (The Sundays), Mary Fahl (October Project), Karen Peris (The Innocence Mission), Karin Bergquist (Over the Rhine), Cassandra Wilson, Tracy Chapman, Joni Mitchell, Natalie Merchant, Sarah McLachlan, Fiona Apple...

If you are like me in this respect, I would strongly suggest you purchase Patty Griffin's Living With Ghosts. Flaming Red is also good, but I don't think it is AS good. Anyway-- Living With Ghosts is just such a strong representation of Patty's best work. Her voice is so powerful and her lyrics display a realism that just hits home with anyone.

If you enjoy any of the female artists I mentioned above, I'm sure you would love Patty Griffin's Living With Ghosts. If you don't you can yell at me and I'll give you a refund. Ok, that's a lie. Just trust me on this one.

Free Music Review: most beautifully moving record I have found in the 90's
Hit: 5 Stars

This cd is a rare bird. Emotional and honest. Stripped to the bone and poetically beautiful. Slightly country folk feel but don't let that stop you as this record is REAL. How many artists can you think of that can carry an entire 40 minute album with only an acoustic guitar? Of course she has such an amazing voice she could perform WITHOUT a guitar! She will pierce your soul with the first track 'MOSES' and rip your heart out with 'EVERY LITTLE BIT'. The 7th track 'FORGIVENESS' is in my opinion one the most beautiful songs ever written. It moves me everytime I hear it. I put it up there with the Stones 'Wild Horses'. She is an artist for the 90's, with the capability to help bridge the gap between country, folk and mainstream rock. If we let her! Give this record a listen, and you'll thank me for it. Also check out 'SCOTT THOMAS BAND - CALIFORNIA'.

Free Music Review: This Gal is Amazing
Hit: 5 Stars

Fell in love with Patty Griffin when I caught her on Austin City Limits with Dave Matthews. Later connected the dots when her name showed up as "songwriter" on a few Dixie Chick songs including "Let Him Fly" and "Top of the World." First purchased 1000 Kisses and was thoroughly impressed. There's nothing better than a singer/songwriter singing her own music. Timidly just purchased Ghosts as I'm always apprehensive when folks use "sparse" and "coffehouse" which often means some singer + guitar = background music at Starbucks. This CD could be further from it! It is Patty and her guitar, and her emotions, singing some of the most poetic lyrics I've ever heard. Definitely one of the best CD purchases I've made in the past year. Can't wait to check out Flaming Red now.

Free Music Review: Patty is a freakin genius
Hit: 5 Stars

My first listen to Patty was in 1998 and it was Flaming Red. It's a hard-hitting rock and roll album and I loved it. So imagine my shock when I bought Living With Ghosts next. I had no idea. This album of spare, acoustic tunes -- just Patty and her guitar -- is an absolute masterpiece. And that is the beauty of Patty. She can switch genres so effortlessly. Be it rock, alt-country, blues, acoustic, it's all done brilliantly. The people who can do that come along once every generation, if that. She is an absolute genius. Just wait until you hear her new stuff that hasn't been released yet. It's all as brilliant as the stuff before. She crushes any worry anyone may have that she could lose her touch. She's got a song called "Free" that's gonna knock you on your asses once again.

Free Music Review: This CD has been in constant rotation in my player since '96
Hit: 5 Stars

BUY LIVING WITH GHOSTS AND FLAMING RED! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT! First of all, don't listen to anyone who says that Flaming Red isn't amazing. It's spectacular! Second, what more can I say about Living With Ghosts that has not already been said. Everything she does is pure poetry. It's one of the best CDs ever. Not Alone is my favorite song of all time. Forfgiveness will move you to tears. Every Little Bit is SO powerful. I had the honor of meeting Patty after a small concert in Hampton, VA. She is an amazing woman, so gracious. She and her band (great musicians) put on a show that exceeds any and all expectations. Patty, THANK YOU for the unparalleled beauty that is your music. Please, come back to Virginia. I can't wait to hear Silver Bell.
