Free Music Review: A MASTERPIECE OF MUSIC!
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a masterpiece of music by a lady who has no peers in the realm of "real" country music. Forget Reba, Martina, Shania, Faith, Trisha and all the rest! Patty is the one to listen to! This CD is a good place to start! They don't come any better!

Free Music Review: Patty's Best Album
Hit: 4 Stars

Taken as a whole artistic statement, this is Patty Loveless' best album. And despite what the Amazon reviewer above says, the song "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" is not only the best song on this disc, it is one of the best country songs I have ever heard. It is pure sorrow put into voice and music. Loveless has a voice like no other in country music just incredible. And she is a very down to earth human being - a wonderful person. I had the oppurtunity to meet her after a concert several years ago and although I was waaaay back in the line to meet her, she stayed until every fan had gotten to see her, pose for pictures, get an autograph etc, and she made time for them all with a genuine appreciation and enthusiasm. I love this woman. She is unequaled in the world of country music ( of course now that Tammy Wynette has passed on . )

Free Music Review: Mountain Soul says it all !!
Hit: 5 Stars

Great album!!! So glad to see popular artists getting back to their roots. I've always been a Patty Loveless fan and this one took her to a new level. I can't recommend this album enough. I love it. Even if you're not a bluegrass fan, give it a try.

Free Music Review: "Mountain Soul" is perfectly titled....
Hit: 5 Stars

I will say that I've never been a Patty Loveless fan, particularly. She seems to have bounced around various types of music that can claim "country" without really being sold on any one of them.

I found this album through the tune, "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive." This tune is written by one Darrell Scott, and I'm sure I'm a distant relative of his, since I have a great grandpa Scott from Harlan County as well. This tune perfectly captures the ennui of Eastern Kentucky coal-mining natives, as I've experienced through spending family summers there for many years.

This is important to my review because Ms. Loveless has a recorded an album of music like her "daddy" loved. In so doing, she has done more than just compiled nice tunes. She has produced a document that not only honors the past, but gives it current relevance.

This album is NOT a bluegrass album, in my opinion. Bluegrass is, of course, quite similar to jazz in its emphasis on improvised solos, music without lyric, and underlying sense of overcoming native blues. On this album, there is not a single tune without lyrics. Solos are not emphasized (although there is monster playing, if you listen carefully). The emphasis is on Patty's voice. This album is much more a folk album than bluegrass.

These tunes and themes run deep in the heart of America. Doing wrong, having wrong done to you, finding solace in faith and prayer, but also, unabashed joy; this album celebrates the human experience.

I like every song on this album, but I'll just mention a few. Any of these tunes is worth the purchase price alone.

"You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive," as I've said, really captures a unique place. When the family in the song "moves out west to Pineville" to seek a better life, I identified with that. Pineville is only 30 miles away, but out of the deep mountains. Still, that "rich land river" mentioned in the song flooded the town to a depth of 14 feet in the 1960's...you can never really run from your troubles after all.

"Pretty Little Miss." When I went to Harlan after I first got this album, I played it for my Dad. He got teary, and said, "My mom used to sing me that song when I was a kid." Imagine that.

"Sorrowful Angels." The story of a true love spurned. This song brought tears to my eyes as I listened to it, over and over again, driving through Eastern Kentucky. What an idea; heaven mourns over our life's mistakes.

Don't buy this album to compare Patty's bluegrass against other folks. Don't buy it just because you like Patty's voice or songs. Buy it if you seek true human connection. It's in every song.

Free Music Review: Bluegrass Music has found its Queen!
Hit: 5 Stars

Patty Loveless' "Mountain Soul" album is purely AWESOME!!! This album definitely deserved to win Best Bluegrass Album in the Grammys a few years ago. Here is how I rate each song on it (on a 5 star scale):

1) The Boys Are Back In Town- a great uptempo song and a nice way to introduce this album. (5 stars)
2) The Richest Fool Alive- nice slow song, the lyrics are good too. (5 stars)
3) Daniel Prayed- This uptempo song was written by Ralph Stanley and has awesome harmonies by Ricky Skaggs. His voice blends with Patty's very well, making it a true gospel classic. (5 stars)
4) Someone I Used to Know- remake of a Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner duet with Jon Randall. Good effort though. (4 stars)
5) Out of Control Raging Fire- great duet with Travit Tritt. Love the ending of it when she holds the note "fire" for a long time. (5 stars)
6) Rise Up Lazarus- Love this song and proves Patty's great songwriting skills. A great gosep tune. (5 stars)
7) Cheap Whiskey- This song has been a favorite of mine since Martina McBride recorded it. Patty gives this song a more rustic, down home feel, and it's a real treat. (5 stars)
8) Pretty Little Miss- one of my favorite bluegrass up-tempo songs. Love the acapella beginning to this song. (5 stars)
9) I Know You're Married (But I Love You Still)- another good duet with Travis Tritt. (5 stars)
10) Sorrowful Angels- I LOVE this song written by Leslie Satcher!!!! The rawness of it is great. Rebecca Lynn Howard is on background vocals. It doesn't get any better than that. (5 stars)
11)Soul of Constant Sorrow- I LOVE Patty's version of this song. I honestly think she did a better job than Dan Tyminski and the Soggy Bottom Boys (don't get me wrong- they are good too).
12) You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive- This song crowns Patty as the Queen of Bluegrass!!!! I love how she starts the song ACAPELLA and she uses her voice well to narrate the song and capture the emotion on every lyric. This song is close to Patty's heart since her family's lives revolved around the coal mines of Eastern Kentucky. I love her humming at the end of this song as well. (6 stars/5 stars!!!)
13) Two Coats- this song is ok but has yet to grow on me. (4 stars)
14) Sounds of Loneliness- I LOVE this song soooo much. It's tied as my favorite on the album. Written by Patty herself as a teen, talking about loneliness. It was her father's favorite song of hers as well. I love her range in this song and her humming is exceptional. Shows her pure mountain vocals. (5 stars!!!!)

One of the best bluegrass albums you'll ever buy by one of the best female country vocalists out there. This album is definitely worth every penny.
