Free Music Review: Pure Country, The Way It Should Be Done
Hit: 4 Stars

This is one of the best new country albums I've heard in a long while. Think Tammy, Patsy, and Loretta. It's country the way it should be done, not the over-produced rock and pop music that passes for country these days.

The album starts off with a rollicking Why Baby Why, transitions into some sweet bluegrass harmony on The Pain of Loving You, then hits the nail squarely on the head with a heartfelt He Thinks I Still Care.

Sleepless Nights, ironically, is a bit too sleepy for my taste. This somnambulent pace fits some tracks better than others: Crazy Arms, for instance. Throughout, Patty's voice is soulful and sweet and the harmonies are nicely done. My personal favorite is the old Webb Pierce classic, There Stands the Glass. Yes, sometimes ladies drown their sorrows at the bar, too. The rest of the album maintains the same high standards. Color of the Blues, Next in Line, and Please Help Me, I'm Falling are standouts. Patty finishes with Cold, Cold Heart, her voice husky, honest, and real country.

If I have any criticism of this album, it might be how laid back the delivery and production are. There's nothing flashy here. Several songs could have benefited from a faster tempo or grittier instrumentals. It ain't honky tonk, that's for sure. The title track, Sleepless Nights, in which Patty duos with Vince Gill is the weakest track by far. Vince is a great talent, a great guy, but his musical taste generally lacks bite. This track could have been pulled from any of the many generic Vince albums. The duet with Jedd Hughes on That's All It Took is, by contrast, is much better.

Overall, though, this album would be a welcome addition to anyone's country music collection. It takes a lot of courage to produce an album like this in today's country market. Show Patty some love and buy this little gem. You won't be disappointed.

Free Music Review: Patty Hits a Triple
Hit: 4 Stars

The ghost of Gram Parsons hovers over this project. Parsons recorded at least four of the songs that are on this CD and should certainly have recorded "There Stands the Glass", since he lived it. Maybe if he lived long enough he would have.

Patty Loveless was a big star in the 90s. Her commercial success has declined in recent years since she neglected to not get older. But her voice is still a fabulous instrument.

This is Loveless's second back to the roots project. Her first, some years ago, "Mountain Soul", explored bluegrass and spiritual music. These are more traditional country songs, some of them quite familiar and more commercial than `Mountain Soul".

Loveless has the singer's most important asset: an instantly recognizable voice. She shows guts by tacking `Sleepless Nights', previously recorded to aching perfection by Gram and Emmylou. The Parsons/Harris version is still definitive, but Patty's is very worthwhile. Vince Gill's harmony nicely frames her lead vocal without overwhelming it.

While I would pay to hear Patty sing the phone book, it's when the material is first class- and much of this is- that her voice, phrasing and passion absolutely shine. Particularly excellent are the girlfriend-you-done-me-wrong "I Forgot More than You'll Ever Know (About Him)"; "Next in Line", which sounds like a band chick's love letter to her straying musician; and "There Stands the Glass".

Since none of these songs is new, perhaps the producers of the project thought they needed to provide more of them. This weakens the CD; several of the tracks are either second-tier songs ("Color of the Blues") or have been recorded so many times it's hard to see the point of one more version ("Crazy Arms"). That said, this CD is very worthwhile.

Free Music Review: Very nice, but not thrilling.

I've really come to love Patty. She's deeply authentic, and I also like that her husband-producer, Emory Gordy Jr. played with Emmylou, Gram Parsons, Steve Earle, and Elvis. That's pretty amazing! This is a nice collection of great songs, but it just doesn't have the spark of the Mountain Soul albums, for instance. Believe me! It's still good! but I just can't give it five stars.

For the most part the song selection is good on this cd. Patty Loveless has a nice traditional voice that is very enjoyable, but occasionally the songs begin to sound a little the same in the delivery.
