Reviewgium - Volume I, issue XIV

Paul Gilbert is a busy man. Always busy. But surprisingly, this album is a first for him: his first fully instrumental album. And of course, it rocketh. Paul Gilbert has pretty much established that fact that he can do anything on the guitar. Anything. From Led Zeppelin to Joni Mitchell, from Slayer to the Spice Girls. Not to mention he has put out over two dozen albums of original material, including his work with Mr. Big, Racer X, and his solo band(s). He can play eye-moistening love songs, and he can high-speed-shred with the best of them (and often do a much better job at it). Paul is a very liberal guy, and he holds nothing back. Get Out of My Yard is a great, fun album...you can tell he is having fun playing, and you will have fun listening.

Right from the start, with the self-titled track, Gilbert starts showing off his shredding skills. But this album is not all about shredding, as is obvious at the beginning of the second song "Hurry Up," a relatively conservative, almost Rush-like rock song. You really get the best of both worlds on this album, plus some other worlds that Gilbert makes up. Speaking of travelling to other worlds, listen to my favorite track, "The Echo Song" with its techno echo, and imagine yourself careening through space at high speed in your one-man Buck-Rogers-style rocketship, bouncing off planets and flinging exuberantly amidst twinkling stars and comets. Songs like "Straight Through the Telephone Pole" and "Rusty Old Boat" further the subtle vibe of classic rock and retro charm you get throughout the album, as well as Gilbert's obvious sense of humor that can be detected even with the lack of vocals. Other stand-out tracks are "Three E's for Edward," which, from the liners, I assume is a tribute to Eddie van Halen, in which Gilbert plays an acoustic with only three strings, all tuned to E; and then there is the splendid, all-guitar rendition of "Haydn Symphony No. 88 Finale." Someone should tell the Great Kat, that this immaculate masterpiece is how true neo-classical SHOULD sound, not that muddled and nearly incomprehensible twaddling she shamelessly churns out.

Repeating what I said earlier: Get Out of My Yard is a great, fun album...you can tell he is having fun playing, and you will have fun listening. Take that as my recommendation. Paul Gilbert is so diverse and omnipotent, you really never know exactly what he is going to do. Therefore anything he releases is worth checking out, and this album is no exception to that rule. It definitely rivals--and I would even say surpasses--recent releases from guitar greats such as Vai and Satriani, not only in innovation and imagination, but also in technical prowess.

And congratulate the guy. He just got married. Cheers, Mr. Gilbert.

Free Music Review: My new guitar hero!
Hit: 4 Stars

As I prepare for my 3rd G3 show (3/14/07-Phoenix), I decided to get familiar with the new 3rd leg in the tour - MASTER Paul Gilbert. Everyone has their own guitar hero's: Satch, Vai, Petrucci, Morse are among my favorites. Although I had always heard people rave about Gilbert, until now, I never ventured to explore his material - I felt I had enough 'shred' music in my library to last me a lifetime - regardless how good he may be. What a HUGE mistake.

This is a great CD. If you like 'shred/guitar' music - go buy it - you will thank me after you listen to it.

But that's not why I'm writing this review. I was so impressed with Gilbert's library - I had so much fun just listening to the short song clips of each release - that I purchased 4 of his solo CD's on the spot! I owe it to the man to give him props - to honestly and whole-heartedly praise his musical prowess. He's much more than a great guitarist - he can actually sing - he's funny - and a great songwriter. There is so much diversity in his music - so many different influences - it's truly hard to stop listening. From the Ramones to the Beatles to the Beach Boys to any number of rock bands in any decade of rock n' roll music - it's all there.

Thank you Paul. Rock me in Phoenix my friend!

Free Music Review: Crazy guitar album
Hit: 4 Stars

At last, Paul Gilbert (ex-Mr. Big, ex-Racer X) has put together an all-instrumental album of totally shredding guitar.

If you've followed Paul's solo career, you know that he has quite a catalog of his own material that contains some of the most awe-inspiring guitar playing a hard-rock/metal fan could want. What's unique about Paul's previous solo work is the unique combo of ripping guitars, memorable, pop melodies and witty, humorous lyrics. Fans have been asking for an instrumental album for years. Here it is.

This thing just smokes from beginning to end. The very first song ("Get Out of My Yard") sets the tone for the entire disc. This is over-the-top rock guitar at its finest. "Three E's for Edward" is another highlight.

At the end of the day, I prefer Paul's works with vocals to this all-instrumental disc (hence the 4 stars rather than 5). However, this is an album many have wanted to hear for years (myself included) and it's well worth the $$ to hear a true guitar monster just let it rip.

Free Music Review: Great Effort
Hit: 4 Stars

Paul does a really good job here. He mixes up the styles of songs and gives you a little bit of everything. We all know he can play like no one else. Its great to see how versatile he is. I think he may have even held back a bit and could have even shredded some more. The song construction and arangements are solid though and will translate well on the G3 tour I am sure. I love the first track...very innovative. Always excited to hear new material from Mr. Gilbert. A true legend in his own time.
