Free Music Notes for Get Out of My YardFree Music Review: One of Paul's Best! Hit: 4 Stars
Ok... first of all the only reason this disc didn't get 5 stars is that I simply am not into instrumental albums. With that said, this is one of the best instrumental albums I have listened too! Burning Organ is probably my favorite Paul Gilbert album, but this is a close second. I rankthis up there with Steve Vai's "Passion and Warfare" in the instrumental cd category.
Free Music Review: Great Composition as well as Excellent Playing Hit: 4 Stars
What can I say, I want more! Paul is extremely talented as this CD testifies. The songs are different and do not wear the listener out.
If you enjoy instrumentals by Joe Satriani or Steve Vai I think you will find this CD is very similar.
Free Music Review: Good to see an Instrumental CD from Mr. Gilbert Hit: 4 Stars
This CD doesn't seem to be as slickly produced as I would have expected, but the tracks are really good. Some may think instrumental guitar records can lean a little bit into self indulgence, but heck when you are as good as the "G3" guys...
Free Music Review: Another guitar shredder Hit: 3 Stars
I have never heard of Paul Gilbert, until now. "Get out of my Yard" is a guitar instrumental album, all original compositions except "Hayden Symphony", that feature Paul's skills as a guitarist. Most songs are performed in a power trio format (guitar, bass, drums), two tracks are accented with keys, and there is one solo acoustic guitar track. He covers rock, blues, funk, classical, and a couple slower/softer tunes. For me, "Marine Layer", one of the softer tunes, is one of the highlights of the disc. No doubt he can play, and I wish him well on the G3 tour this year, but, for me, instrumental guitar shred albums wear thin after awhile and aren't something I can listen to repeatedly (exceptions to this would include any Allan Holdsworth or Steve Morse release). However, it does spark my interest to check out his other works.
Free Music Review: Not as good as it could be Hit: 3 Stars
I've been very impressed over the years at the level of Paul Gilbert's playing. The man is amazing...probably the best "shredder" out there. So, I was eagerly awaiting this CD...his first all-instrumental. The guitar playing here is absolutely amazing, of course...just what you'd expect from Paul Gilbert. I was terribly dissapointed in the songwriting, though. Few of the songs really stood out as a piece of music on their own, unlike some of the stuff he's done with Racer X in the past. Forgive me for saying this Paul, but much of it sounds like you improvised it in the studio. High points on the disc for me were "Rusty Old Boat" (PG gets funky), and "The Echo Song" (PG does techno). A good effort, of course, but I felt that a guitarist of Gilbert's stature could have done better.
