Free Music Notes for Back in the U.S. Live 2002Free Music Review: Like a fine wine, Macca just keeps Getting Better Hit: 5 Stars
Just as "The Beatles 1" was THE Christmas present to get in 2000, so this double CD is THE Christmas present of 2002 for anyone who loves great live rock and roll, Paul McCartney and/or The Beatles! From the very first song, "Hello Goodbye," the classics, past and present, just keep on coming. For anyone who attended one of his 50 U.S. shows, this is a must have. For anyone who didn't, you will now hear what you missed and why your friends raved so much about the show and why some of them were so willing to go again and again! With this live album (as on the "Paul Is Live" CD) Paul has elected to eliminate his spoken song introductions on this CD. What remains is pure, genuine live music spanning his celebrated 40 year career. Paul sounds exceptional with even the most difficult vocals ("Maybe I'm Amazed," "We Can Work It Out") and amazingly, unlike many artists younger than him, he still performs ALL of his songs live in the same key as the original recordings! His enthusiasm during his performances is evident on show stopping numbers like "Live And Let Die," as he is clearly having as much fun as his band and his audience. One of my personal favorites on this CD is "Vanilla Sky," Paul's Oscar nominated song from the film. Another treat is his touching tribute to John Lennon ("Here Today," a song I never thought I would ever see or hear Paul perform live) and to George Harrison ("Something" which Paul performs on a Gibson ukelele that George gave him as a Christmas present just a few years ago). This CD is probably also the best music bargain of the season, providing TWO CDs of music for the price of one and clocking in at nearly two hours! No one will be disappointed when this CD appears under their tree on Christmas Day! Santa had better stock up on this one!
Free Music Review: Absolutely outstanding!!! Hit: 5 Stars
This is an incredible live album. Being only 22 years old, I clearly missed out on the heyday of the Beatles and most of Paul's solo career. However, I was lucky enough to finally have the one experience I've dreamed of ever since I first started listeing to my dad's Beatles records at the age of 3 or 4...seeing Paul McCartney, my favorite Beatle live in concert. I saw his 2005 show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and I was absolutely blown away. The ticket may have cost me $170, but the 3+ hour show made it worth every single cent. This CD is fairly similar to the set he played that night, which is why I have such a liking for it. Paul is an incredible amazing live persona. He busted out in obscure Beatle numbers that were absolutely incredible to see performed live. Never in my life would I have expected him to play songs like "I'll Get You" or "In Spite of All The Danger"...a track that I don't even believe the Beatles wrote, and you would have only heard if you own Anthology 1. Yes, I am speaking of a different tour, and songs that aren't included on this CD, but I guess what I'm getting at is that this album, as good as it is, can't even come close to doing justice to the amazing experience one gets from seeing this true legend of rock live. I fully recommend buying it if you haven't had the opportunity to see him play in person. Classics like "Let Me Roll It", "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Sgt. Pepper's", "Jet", and "Band on the Run" are just that more amazing when performed live. For a 63 year old man...he rocks like he was 23. You honestly could never guess his age from the show he puts on. The energy he gives off is uncanny. Truely, Paul McCartney may be the greatest living rock legend of this time, times past, and times to come.
Free Music Review: Paul IS aLIVE...and Getting Better, ALL the time! Hit: 5 Stars
I hope people will read this review and realize that this is the true story of the Back In the US CD...Some simple truths: Can Paul still hit the high notes? Yes. Is the band the closest thing to post-Beatles, '76-era Wings with the chops of today? Yes. Should you buy this album and play it daily? YES. It was rather disconcerting to read a few reviews where the obviously tone-deaf reviewer wrote, "...and he can't hit the notes, struggling, blah, blah, blah." Well, I ask you to skip to Getting Better, Coming Up, Let Me Roll It, Maybe I'm Amazed, and I Saw Her Standing There and you *hear* for yourself whether ANYONE, 60 or 22, could hit those notes that way our Paulie does. Are there a few 'bum' notes? Yeah, and guess what...it's live, baby, LIVE. Ever hear the Beatles live? More than a few bum notes. But that's hardly something to use as a categorical description of this CD. These performances are top-notch, soaring with raw energy, raw emotion, and pure MUSIC. And again, Paul's got nothing to hide. For the few bad notes that may exist, there's 10-times the 'Whoo-hoos!' and 'Yeah-yeahs!' to make up for it...and he does. As far as the 'sound' of the CD, I'd have to say that this truly emulates the concert experience, so much so, that my ears were ringing after a sit-down-listen took place for nearly two hours in my living room. The disc is mixed LOUD, but you feel like you're there, and if you're weren't, well, you will be. So, my only complaint would be...not inter-song talking. I too enjoy Paul's intros (campy as they may be), but this is a concert record, and much like WINGS OVER AMERICA, is destined to become his *new* Live Record of choice. ...it's getting better all the time. :-)
Free Music Review: Paul McCartney: Back In the U.S. With FURY! Hit: 5 Stars
Where do all these people get the idea that Paul's voice sounds off-key on this album? Mostly all artists voices sound a bit off-key or otherwise weird when they are on stage; there's no studio production to patch over it. I am an 18 year old Paul McCartney fan, and I strongly feel that Paul's voice on this album sounds genuine. Think about it, wouldn't a flawless-sounding voice from any artist performing on stage sound a bit produced and fake? Even worse, it could be evidence that the artist is lip-synching. What I love about this album is that it encompasses all of my favorites without me having to go buy all the albums separately. I also like hearing the "rare" songs, also. But the thing that does disappoint me is the way Paul's in-between talking is cut out. Had that banter been included, the tributes to Lennon and Harrison and also his dedication to Heather would have sounded more sincere and formal to the listener. It also makes the listener feel that they are actually there at the concert. Favorites: "Hello Goodbye", "All My Loving", "Lonely Road", "Vanilla Sky", "Something", "Here, There, and Everywhere", "Maybe I'm Amazed", "C Moon", "Freedom" (to some extent), "Let It Be", "Hey Jude" (now what kind of Beatles fan would I be without naming "Hey Jude"), "The Long and Winding Road"(very emotional, my absolute favorite on the album), "Lady Madonna", "I Saw Her Standing There", and "Yesterday" Dissapointments: "Eleanor Rigby", "Band on the Run", "Jet". With only three misses out of 35 songs, this album deserves the citation of instant classic.
