Free Music Notes for Back in the U.S. Live 2002Free Music Review: Permanent Smiles!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Whenever I listen to this CD, I have to sing, or else my mouth will get sore from smiling too much! Although I saw this glorious concert twice, the CD is a much different experience, and in it's own right, it's GREAT!!! At the concert, you couldn't hear much over the terrific roar of the crowd, but on the CD the crowd is toned down quite a bit, except for on that glorious part in Hey Jude when all you hear is thousands of people singing together.I was really pleased with the quality of this CD and it's just the right thing to help me remember those wonderful hours that I spent with my favorite musician, Sir Paul McCartney. The only thing I half regret about this is that it cuts out all the lovely commentary. Paul talked to us before every song about the next song, or massages he's had, or little old ladies in the audience. It was a three hour concert and a 2 hour CD. However, I completely understand why they cut it out. They would have been hard pressed to fit all of that in one set without making it too expensive, and the commentary could have taken away from the pace for those who didn't get to see him in concert or just want to enjoy the music. I love you, Paul, please come again!!!!

If you had to take one Live McCartney CD with you on a desert island this would be it.
There are the obligatory Hey Jude, Let It Be, Live and Let Die, etc... along with enough songs that he'll probably only play once (Hello Goodbye, Lonely Road, Mother Nature's Son, Getting Better, Something,...) to make it all worthwhile.
Although McCartney is usually true to the original studio version, he mixes things up enough to make the concert interesting. "Something" on the ukelele, We Can Work it Out on a simple guitar, Carry that Weight on a plain piano, Sgt Pepper blended with the Abbey Road medley, etc...
The only "ouch" is Freedom, the If I Had A Hammer 9/11 sound-a-like which borders on painful.
On the other side of the equation, you have Lonely Road - a real sleeper. One of my favorites - I'm surprised it never really caught on.
And here is heresy: Can't Buy me Love and I Saw Her Standing There sound more exciting and vibrant than on the Beatles' studio album. Even My Love - unadulterated mush on the studio version - nearly sounds good as a result of McCartney's remarkable vocal gyrations.
People will listen to this concert 100 years from now and say "wow".
Free Music Review: A great album and a great memory Hit: 5 Stars
I am a big music fan, and in my huge collection of CDS, I have a bunch of different stuff(you can click on "See all my reviews" and see some of the other albums I have and see how wide my CD collection is). With 9/11, the death of Beatles guitarist George Harrison, and George W. Bush making his way into The White House, 2001 would prove to be not only a sad, but somewhat of a controversial year also. 2002 was a great year not only for me, but for the music industry also, as it saw Paul McCartney's "Back In The U.S. Live 2002" live album. This album not only has material McCartney originally recorded in a studio with The Beatles, but also some Wings material and some of McCartney's solo material that he did without The Beatles or Wings, as well as a touching tribute to both John Lennon and George Harrison(The Lennon tribute was "Here Today", the Harrison tribute was "Something"). Some of the material on this album is also more recent. I was lucky enough to get to catch McCartney on his "Back In The U.S." tour, and it was a great concert, while this live album is a great memory for those who were not only there for McCartney's legendary tour, but for all Paul McCartney/Beatles/Wings fans also.
Free Music Review: Paul's Back Hit: 5 Stars
Back In The US is yet another live release from Paul McCartney. Some of the songs that appear on this set have appeared on his previous three live sets, but this time Mr. McCartney has a renewed sense of purpose. The tour that was conducted in support of his Driving Rain album was bathed in a sense of loss. His old friend George Harrison had passed and America suffered the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Mr. McCartney was in New York City on 9/11 and the tour was his contribution to the healing process. The band is great form and Mr. McCartney is as lively and energetic as he's ever been. "Back In The USSR", "Jet", "Hello Goodbye" and "Can't Buy Me Love" are wild and fun. Mr. McCartney puts his full vigor into every track, even making an old throwaway b-side like "C Moon" sound as if it was as important of a song as "Hey Jude". The album's slower songs have a poignancy to them and his tribute version of "Something" is backed by a ukulele which was Mr. Harrison's favorite instrument. Mr. McCartney is often criticized for his sunny and carefree personality, but in these times, he is a welcome breath of air and Back In The US is a welcomed album.
Free Music Review: the best of the best Hit: 5 Stars
What an album! Think of it this way, he could of done a 'b' set list, greater than any other touring artist of the modern era. He didn't include Get Back, Penny Lane, Got to Get You Into My Life,I'm Down, For No One, She's a Woman, And I Love Her, Drive My Car, etc from beatle days , or just think how this band could have ripped through Hi Hi Hi , Too Many People, or even Helter Skelter if Paul was worried about being cool. Standouts from this album would have to be Maybe I'm Amazed, Getting Better, Coming Up, Back in The U.S.S.R.. Tracks that I didn't fully appreciate before. The guy rocks as well as he does ballads. Definately the best character band Paul has had[post Beatles of course]and some amazing chemistry between the players. Give Paul the credit he is due, everybit Lennon's equal. Just think what would have happened if John had taken McCartney's route and toured after releasing Double Fantasy , mixing in Beatles tunes with Watching the Wheels, with Yoko singing backup and trying to do Strawberry Fields night after night. How would people view history then?
