Now if you ask me, and a lot of chart historians do now and again, this here album is one of the most interesting pop trivia questions in the modern world. See, Paul's biggest selling single was apparently "Mull of Kintyre" and for some wacky reason it was never really released on the left side of the Atlantic in the late 70s because some crazy record company individual had some idea that what was a monster hit on the right side of the Atlantic wouldn't get no airplay on the left side. Go figure. So there are still a lot of folk on the North American continent who have no idea about "Mull of Kintyre" and that, my friend, is why you need to buy this here 1993 re-issue version on CD so you can hear what them Bruits were hearing back in the late 70s and going ga-ga over it to boot. Now, don't get me wrong, the Brits go ga-ga over some fairly weak material at times (if they fell for Scritti Politi in droves then they remain suspect as a rational nation). Anywho, this here CD re-release is worth having just for the clean, crisp copy of "Mull of Kintyre" and I'd suggest playing it over and over again to try to make up for lost time.

The twins love this here CD mainly because of that one single. They like the rest pretty good too, but they play that one over and over again and treat it like it's a national anthem or a hymn or some such because every time it comes on they holler through the double wide trailer for Junior to stop what he is doing and stand at attention. That boy does what he is told and stands there until the song is done playing and then he sits down and commences to go on about what he was up to - unless they queue it up again, then they make him stand up again ... and he does. I seed him go through that with them a bout six times in a row a few days back and each time he was reverent and silent until the tune finished coming out the speakers, then he went about his business until it started coming out again, and he'd jump up and stand still and all reverential and the like. I guess you could say he has a certain respect for Paul McCartney.

    The previous time Paul McCartney's Wings had been pared down to its core trio (Macca, wife Linda, and singer-guitarist Denny Laine), the band endured a star-crossed series of crises (the sudden defection of two band members and near-disastrous sessions in Nigeria) to produce its enduring 1973 masterpiece, Band on the Run. Conceived and recorded five years later under considerably more idyllic circumstances, London Town often seems like the previous album's laconic twin. It's also a collection whose softened edges often foreshadow the tone of not only McCartney's later, oft-critiqued solo work, but that of old partner John Lennon's final album, Double Fantasy. Suffice it to say that "With A Little Luck" is not "Band on the Run," nor will "I've Had Enough" ever challenge "Jet" for pop-icon status. Still, there are enough natural McCartney-isms here ("Café on the Left Bank," "I'm Carrying") to suffuse it with a consistent, breezy tone. --Jerry McCulley
