Free Music Notes for Memory Almost Full

Free Music Review: An interesting experiment.
Hit: 5 Stars

Since I had to be in the car for 8 hours to drive to a conference
this week, I saw an opportunity.
I took 2 of my favorite Macca albums Tug Of War (TOW) and Flaming Pie (FP) and put them on the mp3 player, along with Memory ALmost Full (MAF), and listened to them one right after the other.

After hearing TOW and FP, and realizing again how damn good they are
I thought, "well MAF doesn't stand a chance, I guess Paul has lost it"
and was prepared for a let down.

What a shock - MAF more than holds up, Not kidding here - I did this
experiment twice and the songs on MAF hold their own against the
other two. Even against the uber production on Tug Of War, FP and MAF (even with their "homespun" feel) held up - the production is a hell of a
lot more polished than you would be led to believe.

At any rate, McCartney fans will not be disappointed. If you liked
these albums you'll love this.

You are in for a treat. There's not another band/artist producing anything close to this these days.

Oh, all of you hipsters with your $300 iPods - do yourself a favor and invest in a $30 pair of real headphones that fully cover your ears - you'll never appreciate the full majesty of this disc until you hear it as it was meant to be.

I am an ancient Beatles lover who essentially stopped following he careers of the individual members after the band broke-up in 1970. I received "Memory Almost Full" as a gift, which is how I came to listen to it. And I must say that I am quite impressed by the quality of some of the songs. Paul is undoubtedly a gifted musician, and I am amazed that at age 65 he is still able to produce songs that can stick in your head or tug at your heartstrings. There are the jaunty ditties for which Paul is renowned, but overall the mood of this album is dark and melancholy. Most noteable is "The End of the End." I have no doubt that had it been written in the 1960s, this song would now be considered a classic alongside "Let It Be" and "Hey Jude." It really is a touching song, especially for those of us who, like Paul, are entering our senior years.

I am truly puzzled by the extremely low ratings accorded this album by some earlier reviewers. What exactly are their objections? Paul's music is far more sophisticated and complex than almost anything else being written for the pop audience today, and it is hard to place it in a single genre. As a fmous symphony conductor once said, there are only two kinds of music--good music and the other kind. Paul writes good music. May he continue to do so for many years.

While most of this doesn't quite compare to CHAOS AND CREATION IN THE BACKYARD, it's still proof that Paul McCartney has been on an incredible creative streak.

What I like most about the selection here is that there is only one "sappy" song (SEE YOUR SUNSHINE), and even that one is genuinely upbeat and "feel-good" in a way that doesn't get tiresome (by contrast, my only complaint with CHAOS was that it had at least one too many love songs). The other two (YOU TELL ME and GRATITUDE) sound, to me at least, drenched in bitter irony; while I try not to make comparisons to his Beatle years, these two songs have a disillusioned, RUBBER SOUL sensibility, continuing in the vein of RIDING TO VANITY FAIR only more subtle. It's often the case that the biggest romantics can also write the greatest kiss off songs.

The classical arranging McCartney has been involved with really shows on other tracks, primarily MR. BELLAMY and HOUSE OF WAX (one of his best...ever...). I don't envy McCartney's having to balance his innate pop sensibility with both his "high" musical ambitions and rock 'n' roll desires, especially given the ridiculous expectations of his (often sycophantic) public, but he pulls it off quite well here.

And I can't stop listening to DANCE TONIGHT.

Free Music Review: Dance Upon the Battleground
Hit: 5 Stars

Paul McCartney's "Memory Almost Full" is an excellent addition to his body of work. While I couldn't get the lyric section on his website to pull up for my computer, some of his lyrics are incredibly intriguing, as I hear them. "House of Wax" is a very interesting track with a great orchestral build and some of Paul's most expressive singing on the disc with blistering electric guitar, "Lightning hits the house of wax, women scream, "another round" to dance upon the battleground..." "You Tell Me" has Paul singing wistfully in his upper register with a stately melody. It evokes a flood of memories with each lyrical snapshot, "When was that summer when it never rained? The air was buzzing with the sweet old honey bee, let's see, you tell me." "Only Mama Knows" starts & concludes with a string orchestration. Then Paul breaks out into rock track, "On my hand was a plastic back with a picture of my face; I was crying, left to die in this God-forsaken place." What an exquisite track! "See Your Sunshine" bubbles with joy and puts a smile on my face like "Silly Love Songs." Other tracks like "Mr. Bellamy," "Vintage Clothes" & "Feet in the Clouds" are delights. This is an excellent outing from Paul McCartney, one that should be received joyfully by most of his fans. Bravo!

Let me say first that I am a big, if not THE biggest Paul McCartney fan of the planet. In my humble opinion he has been more important for the twentieth century than the invention of the personal computer and personal massage implements; and everybody that says that Paul is Dead deserves a personal firing squad!
That being said, I must say I wasn't ready for Memory Almost Full. Never before has Paul channelled his Marilyn Manson tendencies (already clearly present in classics like My Love and We All Stand Together) (MM is rumoured to be one of the frogs, he was seven) so well and so fiercely.
Songs like Dance Tonight, You Make My Sun Shine and Gratitude may have innocent-sounding titles, but they are dark gothic rockers with lyrics that deal with hardcore issues, such as substance abuse, chainsaw torture and naked cowboys on a mountain. And what a difference that makes! Grumbling in his lowest tones, slapping his bass like a new-born baby, and erupting into seismic drum soloing, this is Paul at his deepest and his post Beeatles best! All that he needs now is a risky video of him dancing with an underage blonde! Once I've dyed my hair I'll be the first to volunteer! Paul Paul Paul! Baby!
