Paul's problem -- or so many people's problem with Paul -- is that he writes bad songs. He certainly has written a lot of them in the same vein, so it's not like he's not being true to himself. We loved his Beatles work, probably more so because it was offset by the songs of John and George. He always insisted he was a rocker, but he was more of a music hall nostalgic. His themes have been pure and noble, but also shallow. "Silly Love Songs" is likely his manifesto, and thank God it's bouncy and fun. "Off the Ground" is riddled with clunkers, as if he forgot temporarily how to craft something riveting, which, of course, he at times is expert at. This album is as maddening as "Driving Rain," with melodies so exquisite side by side with buzz killers that beg for a flick of the remote. But twice he gets it so right that he simply towers again as one of the great gods of pop rock -- "Golden Earth Girl" is so shimmery and sad and lovely. At a time in which we have polluted the planet so thoroughly, Paul, in song, has given us a vision of crystal purity, a reminder of what we have soiled, with a melody as perfect in its majesty as he has ever written. Second, "Winedark Open Sea" finally harnesses Paul's fascination with simplicity in something very deep. The chords repeat over and over, like waves lapping . . . it is an existential plaint, a deep lamentation on the limits and limitlessness of time and love, and the great sea is his metaphor. I hope Linda loved this song because it might have been his greatest musical gift to her...
