Free Music Notes for Tug of WarFree Music Review: Go Ahead on and Get It Hit: 5 StarsNow if you ask me, and plenty of Stevie Wonder fans do now and again, this here album by Paul McCartney features one of the best Stevie Wonder duos of all time, namely "Ebony and Ivory." This Tug Of War Album gave us a grand total of five singles and remained on the charts for a whopping 29 weeks, and at the #1 spot for three. This isn't the best showing for a McCartney album, but then again any McCartney album usually sells a whole passel more than then next best performer. The other singles lifted off this here album are "Take It Away," and "Get It," as well as "Dress me Up As a Robber." Not bad for a man many were writing off at the time as past his prime.
A lot of folks here about were writing me off as past my prime here a while back, and then I went ahead on and won me the Tri-County Hog Callin' Contest, the Chesterfield County Yodeling Championship, the Cow Pie Toss at the County Fair, and the much coveted Road Kill Recipe Sweepstakes. We don't actually cook up road kill, it's just a traditional contest whereby folk around Chesterfield County make up outlandish recipes for road kill and post them in the Chesterfield County Gazette every April 1st. It's a traditional around these parts, but we don't actually cook up the stuff and we certainly don't go in for eatin' none of them dead critters. Anyway, I won all these things in quick succession and felt like I had kind of made me a comeback like Sir Paul... who just keep going strong even after shedding the Beatles AND Wings and also after getting roughed up in them business arrangements with Michael Jackson. They way I see it, if he can keep coming back strong then he ought to be a shining example to all of us as a model of perseverance and creative integrity.
Even if you don't particularly care for Mr.McCartney's music, I'd go ahead on and get this here album because it is so enjoyable to listen to. Plus that, it is mighty fine background noise when you are needing to think up some cockamamie recipe for road kill...which we don't actually cook and eat. Wouldn't want to get rumors started about folk in Chesterfield County. We may be rural, but we ain't hicks.
Free Music Review: People see but they don't understand Hit: 5 StarsI'm constantly amazed at the interpretations of listeners. Are we all hearing the same songs? This album is wonderful, if for no other reason than "Here Today". It makes all other Lennon tributes seem lightweight by comparison. There are stronger and weaker cuts, but this one song makes the entire package worthwhile.
Free Music Review: I guess it's all a Tug of War Hit: 3 StarsI would give it 3 1/2 stars if I could. There's not really anything wrong with this album. It's produced well. There are several highlights for me. Of-course, Here Today is probably the seeked song because Paul sings about his relationship with Lennon, this being the first Paul McCartney album after Lennon died. Most of the songs on this album are gentle, soft and underproduced. Most of the material is also slow in tempo. The exception being my favourite song, a three way medley Get it, Be what you see and dress me up as a robebr. Get it is a rockabilly piece with Carl Perkins, Be what you see is an interesting 30 second piece singing with the vocoder and Dress me up as a robber is a haunting little R&B song. I also love the song Wanderlust, a very interesting ballad that benefits from George Martin's arrangement. The album does feature a lot of George's adventurous arrangements. The style of music is essentially ballads and soul-pop. There's very little rock n roll though Ballroom dancing is something along those lines. I think Tug of War is better than it's follow up, Pipes of peace but I do admit feeling that it could have benefitted from something light-hearted and fun like 'Average Person', but maybe I'm wrong. Something like that may not have fit the concept of this album that is perhaps too itnrospective for the likes of 'Average Person' and 'Sweetest Little Show'.
Oh yeah, and I like 'Ebony and Ivory'.
Free Music Review: A Musicians review of this album... Hit: 5 StarsAs a musician (and even just a fan), I very much enjoy this album. To me, this album depicts all of what an album should be.. Diverse, show musical talent, fun yet emotional at the same time, and full of great hooks. From start to finish, McCartney glides through these compositions with such style and ease that it truly sounds as if these works came out of him without any effort. What makes the album fun and unique is how each song is so unique in it's own way, but perfectly blends into the next composition. It makes the album very easy to take in because there really isn't any suprizes. It's very well produced and done with an emotional grace. As a music fan, you will love how diverse this album is. It flows well, it's got great melodies and hooks to keep you interested from start to finish, and the best part is how well this album has aged. Most 80's albums do not cross generations very well at all, but Tug Of War lasts because of the diversity in it. This is a must have purchase for any music fan. If RollingStone can give this album a 5 star rating, (which they NEVER do that), then you know you HAVE to have it! All the best, -AndyMan- ;o)
