Free Music Notes for Amoeba's SecretFree Music Review: The best concert ever! Paul rocks da house! Hit: 5 Stars
The only problem that I have with this cd is that the whole show was not on here. It was a great show and totally worth the 3 days in line. Where else can you see an artist of this magnitude play no more than 15 ft away from you? For those that are complaining about the sound, you have to understand that Amoeba Records IS a record store and not a concert venue. This originally came out on vinyl and was only supposed to be for a limited run as this was sold to raise money for charities that Amoeba supports. They did not realize just how much people would want this. When they sold out at their stores, the only able to buy it, so quickly they then realized that they had something in their hands. That is why they made new pressings. Amoeba has sold other recordings of performances at their stores that did not sell like this. This was new to them.
I was very happy to hear how some people heard the excitement that we, the audience, had. It really was a great moment in time to have been there.
Free Music Review: A Rockin' Little Sample Hit: 5 Stars
You can tell playing for the smaller crowd gave Paul a closer connection to the audiance. Listening to this little sample of the show leads you to believe the crowd went away thinking "This man can rock". But they knew it already. This was his crowd.
This disc was nominated for a grammy and Paul performed on the show. He did the crowd pleaser "I Saw Her Standing There". A better choice may have been "That Was Me", with photos flashing of the Beatles on Sullivan, Sgt Pepper, Let it Be, Magical Mystery Tour, Band on the Run, the Cavern Club, Say Say Say, ... etc.
The general public does not know how good Paul's new material is. He plays the old favorites at every high profile appearance.
Come on Paul. Go on Letterman and do "Nothing Too Much Just Out Of Sight". A different album, but the same Paul.
Free Music Review: Memory Performed Hit: 5 Stars
This live set performed at Amoeba Music in the summer of 2007 is a great addition for fans of McCartney's concerts. Two of the tracks are from his 2007 album Memory Almost Full ("Only Mama Knows" and "That Was Me"), while the other two tracks are classic McCartney from the Wings-era ("C Moon") and The Beatles (the great "I Saw Her Standing There").
It's unlikely this will win over any new fans, but McCartney has always been great and this EP is no different. The intimacy of the performance may be lost to editing down a 20-track set, but the energy and fervor is present in McCartney's clean playing and brisk vocals.
The live rendition of "I Saw Her Standing There" is the best of the four tracks here, attributable to the song's classic status and rock roots, and it remains one of my favorite Paul tracks.
Free Music Review: MACCA IS BACKA Hit: 5 Stars
Everything you heard is true - the Grammy nomination for best male rock vocal performance (for That Was Me) is a mind-blowing crowning achievement for this ageless 66 year old wonder.
Buy this disc along with The Fireman / Electric Arguments if you haven't already.
This is truly great stuff. (alright, maybe not C-Moon. I much would have prefered hearing Paul rip it up on the flip side of that single, Hi-Hi-Hi, but you can't have everything)
added 1/31/09 - Only Mama Knows sounds more and more like a true classic.....why wasn't this cut nominated too?
Free Music Review: That was Paul! Hit: 5 Stars
This is just more evidence of Sir Paul's creative revival. The former Beatle has been by turns a pop-classicist and a studio experimentalist of late (Memory Almost Full and Electric Arguments have represented these two sides of his musical persona), but here decides to just cut loose and rock out at an unlikely venue: a record store in Los Angeles (that happens to be one of my favorites). It's to the man's credit that he didn't overpackage or remix this, but just issued it as an EP with raw, imperfect sound. It adds to the looseness and excitement. Just listen to him shout!
