Free Music Notes for Give My Regards to Broad StreetFree Music Review: half decent, half garbage Hit: 3 Stars
First off...the movie is just plain bad...save the "Eleanor Rigby" segment, which is an interesting video, but is totally out of touch with the rest of the film. The soundtrack? Well, it certainly has it's moments. "No More Lonely Nights" is one of Paul's best ballads with some GREAT guitar work from Pink Floyd's David Gilmour. "Not Such a Bad Boy", "So Bad" and "No Values" are loose, raw and rocking (with Dave Edmonds, John Paul Jones & Ringo backing). The version of "Silly Love Songs" here honestly blows the original away; a high energy romp with a slightly differnt arraingement and a SMOKIN' bass solo by Louis Johnson. The Beatles' "For No One" recieves a nice treatment with a string quartet. "The Long & Winding Road" gets updated, saving it from elevator music hell. More how Macca originally intended in the first place. And "Eleanor Rigby/Elanor's Dream" is overblown and bombastic but still a pleasant listen, showing off George Martin's fine arraingement chops & forshadowing Paul's orchestral experiments by nearly a deacade. The rest? Pretty pointless. Vapid covers of Beatle & then-recent solo material (and not even the best stuff at that), and a painful dance re-do of "...Lonely Nights". What was he THINKING?? As is typical with McCartney material from this period, both the movie & soundtrack could have been SO much better. There are hints of good things, but it still falls far short of the mark. There is stuff worth getting here, but still only for fans.

There are four new tracks on the album. 'Goodnight princess' is a jazzy instrumental that Paul does not appear on, which is melodic but unmemorable. 'No more lonely nights' is an excellent 1980's Macca ballad. Fantastic tune and great guitar work. The other two are rock and roll songs. Completely unspectacular. 'Not such a bad boy' has a godd electric riff and solo, with a good Paul vocal. However, Linda sings back up vocals and is completely out of tune, specifically on the 'no more' lines. 'No values' is rubbish and has little tune. The rest are covers of Beatles songs and some recent Macca solo albums. They are all good and Eleanor Rigby is transformed into an excellent orchestral piece. However, I really see no improvement in the other Beatles numbers, even though they are good. 'So bad' was always a lovely song and is so here, but the backing vocals on the 'had' section which are not held, but repeated, almost stocatto like, ruins the effect. 'Silly love songs' really is the only track to improve massively on the original. Nice strong bass part and I (think) Steve Lukather from Toto is singing backup on the 'how can I tell you about...' section, which is a further improvement on Denny Laine's delivery.
A nice album well worth getting, but ignore the bonus tracks, they are a complete waste of time.
Free Music Review: Not one of his best but definitely worth a listen Hit: 3 Stars
I've been a McCartney fan since I was 11... it was 1980 and I have very fond memories of that summer listening to McCartney II almost constantly. Anyway by 1984 I was way too into Ozzy and Black Sabbath to bother with a McCartney album so I just discovered this when I purchased it a few weeks ago. I've always heard what a horrible album this is but after listening to it a few times I don't understand why people have such a hatred for it. It may be that older fans don't like the idea of McCartney releasing Beatles tunes on one of his solo albums. I'm certainly a Beatles fan but being that I was born in 1969 don't have that same Betlemania view of the fabs. Anyway, back to my review... I think it's a good album that I would certainly recommend to any fan. Buy it, you won't regret it.
Free Music Review: Aw, c'mon folks. It ain't that bad! Hit: 3 Stars
Granted, the movie was awful. And, yes, there are Beatle remakes on the album. That's o.k. It's refreshing to hear one of the original Beatles do remakes of some of the old material. "Wanderlust, and "Ballroom Dancing" have that typical McCartney flavor. Together with "Here, There, and Everywhere", and "The Long And Winding Road" remakes, the album is worth the cost. If you're a Beatles purist, you may be offended by the new versions. But, as a life-long Beatles fan, who enjoys all of the "Fab Four's" stuff, "Broadstreet" is a nice change of pace.
Free Music Review: More of a pleasure than the movie Hit: 3 Stars
Undistinguished but not bad Macca collection. The re-recording of the Beatle songs is harmless (surprisingly, Ringo declined to perform on those) and it offers up a few decent new tunes like the title track (and it's remix) and "No Values". He does a great job on the "Tug Of War" tracks "Wanderlust" and "Ballroom Dancing" and the "Pipes of Peace" track "So Bad". A worthwhile unembarassing CD, and certainly more enjoyable than the movie
