Free Music Review: Outstanding Eclectic CD
Hit: 5 Stars

I discovered Paul Pena from the Sundance award-winning film GENGHIS BLUES. In the film Paul was featured performing Tuvan-style throat singing. I was intrigued and wanted to learn more. I then discovered this CD. What a treat! Penas promoter should be [...] for keeping this great talent hidden for song long.

This CD which was originally recorded in 1973 is an eclectic mixture of songs. Some blues, some folk, some rock. Pena seems to be able to play whatever style he wishes. "Venuitan Woman" sounds like the Grateful Dead, "Cosmic Woman" sounds like Jimmy Hendrix, "Lets Move and Groove Together" has Prince meets Marvin Gaye kind of sound, and several songs also have a Country Music feel to them. As you may know the song "Jet Airliner" was written by Pena and was a big hit for Steve Miller. Penas version has much more heart and is also featured on this CD. Even though all of the songs seem to be a different genre, incredibly, they all seem to go together. The glue that puts all these unique pieces together is Pauls incredible voice.

Free Music Review: Wow!! If you only buy one CD this year, this is the one.

Sometimes you have to wonder how many great artists just never get heard by the general public? Even after the tracks of this album were laid down so well, it still took 27 years to get out and get heard. Other reviewers have commented on the brilliance of Paul Pena's musicianship (he's incredible), so I won't. I can't help but think about the influence Paul's music would have had on young musicians growing up over the last 3 decades. This CD is technically beautiful, warm, bright, uplifting and has the driving spirit lacking in so much of todays mass produced pabulum. Buy this CD and along with the rest of us you can realize that you are playing a small part in getting Paul Pena into his rightful spot as one of the truly great talents of his generation. Then maybe, finally, his music will get airplay all over and everyone can bask in its warm light. Hopefully we won't have to wait another 27 years for his next album.

Free Music Review: This CD is like a "Breath of Fresh Air".

New Train by Paul Pena is my favorite CD of 2001. The music reminds me of Carolina Beach Music and although this CD was recorded in 1973, it sounds very fresh. I cannot believe that this was not released, however the tapes were never lost and we can enjoy this great musician, Paul Pena. One of the songs on the CD, that you will definitely recognize is "Jet Airliner". "Jet Airliner" was a big hit for the Steve Miller Band. New Train has some great musicians accompanying Paul. Ben Sidran - piano, Harvey Brooks (Electric Flag) - bass, Gary Malabar (Van Morrison - Moondance), Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead) - Pedal Steel, The Persuasions - backup vocals and others. I cannot convey in words how much fun this CD is, nor can I capture the music with words. However, I guarantee you will love this CD. This is what listening to music is all about, i.e. finding an undiscovered treasure.

Free Music Review: A Hidden Treasure
Hit: 5 Stars

When I first heard this album, I fell in love with it. I wondered why I had never heard of Paul Pena. Then I was outraged to learn that this album was kept from being released for twenty-seven years! It is truly one of the most remarkable and inspired collections of songs I have ever heard. Were I rich enough, I would buy a copy of this CD for everyone. Nobody writes like this anymore, with such passion, such conviction and sincerity. His vocals are so versatile that I did a double take when I heard "Cosmic Mirror". It sounded so much like Jimi Hendrix. But that's not why you will love him. This man is the real thing; nothing phony about him. There is a quality in his music that is missing from today's music. There are NO skip over tracks! From start to finish, New Train by Paul Pena is a gem, a treasure that is thankfully no longer hidden from us.

Free Music Review: One of Earths VERY RARE TREASURES! ! ! !
Hit: 5 Stars

I was instantly transported back in time, when things where free,
and the music was really music... When ever I'm blue, or in the least bit down, I put this CD on and am instantly transported to a place in time that is timeless. Unfortunatly for Paul this was
a recording that was shelved. BIG HUGE mistake for the record industry.... I won't expound on my feelings of that travisty. I think that you will be very pleasantly surprised by the music. Mr Pena has been very ill, and the release of the album now will help his medical bills. What do they say, too soon ill, too late released.
This album should get major airplay.... but this is the real world, and these times are made a little brighter by Pauls music!! I highly recommend this album as one that everybody should have in their collection.
