Free Music Review: How I discovered Paul Potts

I listen to "Our Daily Bread" on my way to work. i heard the story below and then looked up Mr.Potts on the internet. His story and singing is inspiring. I had not heard of him until that morning. Like it or not Americans are very shallow - look at the clowns that show up on American Idol.
"No one watching Britain's Got Talent (a popular televised talent show) expected much when mobile phone salesman Paul Potts took the stage. The judges looked skeptically at one another when the nervous, unassuming, ordinary-looking chap announced he would sing opera--until Potts opened his mouth.
He began to sing Puccini's "Nessun Dorma"--and it was magical! The crowd roared and stood in amazement while the judges sat stunned in tearful silence. It was one of the greatest surprises any such television program has ever had, in large part because it came wrapped in such an ordinary package.
In the Old Testament, the rescuer of Israel arrived at the battlefield in a most unlikely form--a young shepherd boy (1 Sam. 17). King Saul and his entire army were surprised when David defeated Goliath and won the day. They needed to learn the way that God looks at people. He said to the prophet Samuel, "The Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart" (16:7).
If we judge others only by their outer appearance, we might miss the wonderful surprise of what's in their heart."
Free Music Review: EXTRAORDINARY FROM THE ORDINARY

On a plane ride, I sat next to a man whose job it is to market classical music to the masses. We talked at length and he mentioned different things that had been done in Britian such as free classical concerts etc to encourage interest.
Paul Potts may not be a classical best however he is just the type of person to bring classiscal music to the masses. Those who may accurately criticize certain of his skill areas, please look at the bigger picture. Pavorotti and Domingo et al have been marketed as to make opera something nearly untouchable only for the elite.
Classical music if it is to survive and grow needs not only new talent but new ears to listen to it. Yes his first album is formulaic however the masses have mostly never heard these songs and you do want it to be a success. Anything different and you would have the same 6 people as listeners and that is not the point.
My interest in classical music has been growing but frankly it's hard to know how to jump onto a moving train that claims it wants you as a passenger but doesn't slow down. Paul makes this music accessible. I hope that he sings more challenging pieces in the future not for those who are already exposed but so he can teach the rest of us as he goes along.
And please DON'T fix his teeth!!
Free Music Review: I hate opera

I hate opera! Yet I watched every episode of Britain's Got Talent (i have a family who send me dvds from English TV every week). I watched Paul Potts and his weekly climb to fame. To be quite honest he'd already won when the finalists were announced. I was blown away with his story and his voice. I have never been a fan of opera, yet I recognised the song Nessun Dorma that he sang. It was awesome as this was a song that was huge at the dance clubs a while ago which Donna Summer covered.
Potts version is a sobering, chilling version that inspired me to wait for this album to come out. This is not my norm for music, yet may I say thanks to Paul Potts you have helped me open my mind to other music other than Muse, Killers etc.
I have read other reviews and yet while experts in your field have bitched about your pitch, they still have given your album 5 stars, so obviously they knew it was good too. So maybe your fame was due, sad to the passing of the great Pavorotti. Not that you're his replacement, but there's a sort of passing of the torch.
This is an album that's always going to be in my CD changer and will give me pleasure for years to come. Especially when I want to get with my emotional side and shed a tear or so!

Look, there are opera afficianados on here that have dissected this to its musically molecular components, and music experts that have rated and reviewed the track selections, mix, and production values. Yes, it is obviously a rushed product to capitalize on the fleeting fame that is sometimes all some too-good-to-be-true stories get, but that doesn't diminsh the talent of this man. He truly seems to sing from the heart, with a sincerity that will get you every time. He knows who and what he is, and it is not perfect, but it is also not overly polished. You can listen to countless "professional" opera performers and get that perfection of execution and production, and it may touch you because of the technical excellence that expresses the composers efforts so well. In these cases you will find yourself entranced by the composers art. What you won't get is the simple, raw "heart" Paul Potts brings to his performances. It overwhelms any compartive shortcomings and you will find yourself entranced by him, and not the material. The material is irrelevant when he sings; it is just a pleasure to hear him, no matter what song it is. This is a great listen that you will happily return to again and again. I discovered Paul Potts like millions of others I am sure on YouTube but I absolutely love the way he sings. He has the ethereal and rare ability to some how sing past my ears and directly into my soul. I know that sounds weird but that is exactly what happens. I don't speak Italian and yet I understand what the songs are expressing. Its visceral and beautiful and I absolutely love this CD. Buy it... experience it... you won't be sorry you did!
