Free Music Notes for GracelandFree Music Review: my desert island cd too Hit: 5 StarsI am normally a bit wary of mainstream recognition, but if there were an album that truly deserved all the accolades given, this is it. Graceland was the first album I owned and the first album that I remember hearing in its wonderful entirety (I was only 5 when it was released). It's one of those must-own albums that any respectable music collection should contain, regardless of the type of music one normally listens to. I currently own it on CD, cassette, and vinyl - incidentally, if you haven't heard it on vinyl before I highly suggest it; 18 years later I'm still hearing nuances of the music I hadn't noticed before. Basically, I agree with the commentor who said this would be their desert-island album.
Free Music Review: South African pop filtered through Simon's genius Hit: 5 StarsIt's pretty rare that I gush in these reviews, but for me, this album is a truly marvelous creation. The buoyant rhythms of the South African music scene combined with Simon's truly creative lyrics are a wonderful combination of whimsy and significance. From the topical "Boy in the Bubble" to the participation of Los Lobos on "The Myth of Fingerprints," there is not a misfire on this recording. Even "You Can Call Me AL," is a delightful number when you separate it from the novelty video. With the participation of bands like Ladysmith Black Mambazo and others who play "township jive" Simon's music is given added authenticity. In Simon's long and storied career, GRACELAND is perhaps his finest work, an incredible synthesis of pop sensibilities.
Free Music Review: Amazing Hit: 5 StarsThis album is the best album that has ever been made. Yes, that is correct. What is "Graceland"? Musical Euphoria. This is no exaggeration. Everyone should listen to this, you will love it.
Free Music Review: The Best Hit: 5 StarsI grew up listening to this music and although I've heard it so many times my tape got warped, it is still in the top five albums I have heard. Although Rhythm of the Saints is also a great album, Paul Simon has not written anything as good as this since he wrote it. It's a classic.
Free Music Review: A Perfect Blend of the New and the Familiar Hit: 5 StarsMost Americans over the age of 30 recognize Paul Simon's quiet, melodic tenor within seconds of hearing it. We've never gotten tired of it, exactly, but some freshning up is always good. Simon's collaboration with the South African artists featured on this disc creates a surprisingly compatible blending of the new and the familiar. The lush roils of the South African singers alongside Simon's light, sweet musings creates a delectable feast for the careful listener. I've played this album hundreds of times by now and never tire of it. Each time, I hear something new. Each time, a different song, previously only casually heard, becomes, suddenly, a masterwork.
