Free Music Review: trance is dead yet pvd still lives!

Out There And Back is a journey . . . and as other reviewers have failed to realize, journeys are not all adrenaline all the time, but as a whole they can be remembered and blissfully relfected upon. Opening with Vega, the album gets the listener off to a peaceful start, with the slow quiet beats and airy overlay. This is followed up by Pikes, named after the famed Ibiza hotel. One can almost imagine themselves sitting in the loby at Pikes while listening to this track. Similar to Vega it is quiet and chilled, yet with more of a Balearic Beat, the kind of track that makes one wish for a nice sunny summer day with a light breeze. The next track (already well known) is Another Way, the first melodic track, and clearly, as Paul pointed out in a recent interview, a representation of his new approach of making music, he is starting over 'Another Way.' The fourth track is Traveling which Paul describes as an audio plane flight. Imagine the flight during this listen and it is clear, the takeoff, cruising, and a perfect landing, complete with the voice of a stewardess in the background. Avenue is what i would classify as the lowpoint to the album. Already well known and well played, this never did anything for me personally. The last half of the album though, is perhaps the best part. Uplifting vocal tracks such as 'Tell Me Why (The riddle)' (6), 'Together We Will Conquer'(7), and 'We Are Alive'(12) kick the listener with gorgeous vocals and are able to get away without any hint of cheese. 'Together . . .' co-written by Paul and his now wife Natascha (who has already displayed her voice on earlier tracks such as 'For An Angel' and 'Forbidden Fruit') is perfect. A true vocal track (as proven by the radio edit on the second disk) this allows Natascha's voice to shine. The rest of the tracks on the album, 'The Love From Above' (9), 'Columbia' (10), 'Out There and Back' (11) contain accents of their own, each contributing to a different part of the joirney. Perhaps the best track on the album though is track 8 'Face to Face.' Remeniscent of 'Forbidden Fruit' it is the definition of bliss and only gets better in the piano mix on the second disk. The first disk of the album is the journey, listen to it as such. Lie in the sun, walk around, save the second disk for the clubs.

Disc 2 contains all of the remixes as well as three seperate tracks (Santos, All i Need, and Namistai{w/BT}). The remixes are what the adrenaline pumping club jockeys need. The radio edits are also so tastefull and listenable that it is not hard to imagine them on US pop charts . . . .and never leaving. This album has something for everyone and can be listened to by anyone.

Trance may be dead but Paul van Dyk lives on!
