Free Music Review: Not perfect, but close...

Besterberg rounds up several songs from Paul Westerberg's 90's output, plus a few from this century. Hardcore fans will like having some excellent soundtrack releases and b-sides on one official disc, and casual fans will hear songs they may not have known existed.
This collection opens with "Dyslexic Heart", a bouncy piece of froth from the "Singles" soundtrack. It's followed by four songs from Westerberg's first solo album, "14 Songs". "Knockin' On Mine" and "World Class Fad" still relentlessly rock like the first time I heard them. "Runaway Wind" still satisfies and "Things" may well be the closest Westerberg has ever come to a real love song, despite the fact that it still seems to be about a breakup.
The b-side "Seein Her" should have been on an album, it's that good. And "Man Without Ties" is a fun sing-along that will have you rushing to the store for frozen pizza. The "Melrose Place" soundtrack was the host for Westerberg's melancholy "A Star is Bored" and fans of the song should be happy to know they can now send that otherwise worthless CD on to Goodwill. That brings us to one of the best songs on this disc: "Stain Yer Blood" was featured on yet another television soundtrack, this time the wretched Gen-Xer sitcom "Friends". This riotous rocker deserved far better than that, and I'm pleased to see it make this compilation.
Three songs from Westerberg's 1996 release, "Eventually", come next, though I was disappointed that "Ain't Got Me" didn't make the cut. "Love Untold" and "Angels Walk" are as immediate and lush as always, while "Once Around the Weekend" appears in a previously unreleased alternate take. The seriously under-rated "Suicaine Gratification" offers up "It's a Wonderful Lie" and "Lookin' Out Forever" while inexplicably forgetting "Born for Me".
The one selection that could have been left off this collection is a cover of the Beatles "Nowhere Man", which previously appeared on the "I Am Sam" soundtrack. It's a pretty straighforward cover and pointless.
Westerberg's 21st century output is given short shrift with only one song from "Stereo" (Let The Bad Times Roll), one song from "Mono" (High Time), and one song from "Come Feel Me Tremble" (What A Day For A Night). Nothing from "Dead Man Shake" and nothing from "Folker". Being this is a Rhino release, I can see why they would focus on the early to mid-90's work when Westerberg was on a Warner Brothers label, but it's still disappointing. Rhino did pull two previously unreleased "Eventually" era outtakes to put on this collection, the sad "All That I Had" and the catchy "C'mon C'mon C'mon", both of which are worth shelling out the purchase price to hear.
So, why buy this comp? Like I said above, the two outtakes are great and well worth owning. However, the biggest selling point for me might be the excellent booklet. It's pretty much what you've come to expect from Rhino, with excellent photos and top notch detailing, plus enlightening notes from Westerberg himself.

After the Replacements disbanded, singer-songwriter and alt-rock icon Paul Westerberg went on to an acclaimed solo career, first with two songs on the Singles: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack in 1992, and then with his revered 1993 solo debut, 14 Songs. Over the course of his subsequent albums, the legend of Westerberg's stellar songcraft and ragged and brilliant peformances grew exponentially. For the first time, highlights of his post-Replacements work-including his Grandpa Boy incarnation-are collected on a single, inspired disc, with the added bonus of three previously unissued rarities in the mix!The title of this nearly-hits set is so awful it couldn't be better suited to the ex-Replacements front man who earned it. Since striking out solo with a pair of prophetically glossed-up songs on the Singles: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (2002), Paul Westerberg has alternately struggled to shake-off and reclaim the punk urgency of his former band. He has failed at every turn. Whether by destiny or design is an entirely different matter. This collection focuses primarily on his major label output - before he headed for the basement and started making scratchy blues records - meaning it primarily focuses on Paul Westerberg: The Rod Stewart Years. It's not a good sign that among the rarities here, one song appeared on bargain-bin filler Melrose Place: The Music ("A Star Is Bored") and another on Friends: Music From The TV Series ("Stain Yer Blood"). Fortunately, there are just enough traces of that whiskey-soaked heartbreak in tracks like "World Class Fad" and "It's A Wonderful Lie" to remind us why Paul mattered in the first place. --Aidin Vaziri
